Karen Carpenter.

I guess this might have initially been a tongue in cheek suggestion Dermot?

Usually women cannot drum very well for some reason - they end up thumping the skins... Meg White from the White Stripes is a great example of this.

I'm not sure many would nominate Karen as a great drummer either, more of a novelty, but this excerpt shows she has a lot of ability/rhythm!

Meg white wasn't the best example of a woman drummer, shes pretty awful. You often find the better ones are session drummers, but there is plenty out there

I ignored the casual misogyny in his post.

Lars Ulrich from Metallica - especially a young Lars Ulrich - Phenomenal and almost unique talent even as a young upcommer.

Dave Lombardo from Slayer

I'd second Karen Carpenter, by all accounts a very good drummer. She had a hunger for it.

So much so she ended up looking like one of her drumsticks!

Mr Stuart Copeland.

The Cutting edge he got from kits just had a quality that I loved.

Here with Stanley Clarke, arguably the best bass player ever. This is the essence of drum and base.

Please watch the whole set, you'll see what I mean..

Copeland is a great drummer, but he wore gloves, that never sat right with me!
