I think at the time it was more a case of bringing Crouch in as a marquee signing and him and Etherington being given wages that were a lot higher than the rest of the squad. The suggestion now is bringing him in as more of a backup/squad player as a short term solution.

Also it seemed Pulis was set on building a squad full of 6ft2+ lumps, kind of like he's done at West Brom. Remember the players he brought in where:
