Loyalty Payments

Do you give your boss anything for employ you for 10,15,20 yrs? Does make me laugh that you think its all one way. You are in a stable job being paid every month, get paid holiday and expect a bonus? If the money was s***e or you hated the job you would not be there still. Staff should be rewarded each year at Christmas, be that a cash bonus or gift small or large but based on performance and profits not on how long you have been at the company. Long term staff at my firm are the lazy ones who are very comfortable and hard to get rid of. If you got nowt when others got something then work a bit harder you whinger.

Loyalty is never rewarded, unless your falling on your sword, and know where enough bodies are buried. Companies have always looked to their directors and shareholders short term interests, over the long serving rank and file.

The tradition has generally been a watch for long service, or even a small cash bonus, but when you compare that to how easy it is to increase salary by taking 'a promotion' outside the company?

Its a façade to make it look like they care. In those 15 years, you probably could have earned easily a pay rise of 15-25% by leaving the company.

But its ok - you get a watch or a clock after 15 and 30 years, and the respect of your peers, maybe even a few hundred quid.

Where as loyalty to yourself over the company, would probably have netted at least 40-50k in earnings.

So speaks the voice of reason. All of the "pay rises" of note in my career have been as a result of moving to a different company! Loyalty pays nothing. Your company will pay you (and award you pay increases) based entirely on what they think they can get away with.

If I was still with the company I started my career with over 15 years ago I'd probably be looking at a little over half my current salary.

To answer to your first point is yes, loyal service and making the share holders sh*t loads of money, Our company bangs on about loyalty and staff retention, the cost of recruiting a new staff member for a position like mine is in excess of £8,000. My company makes healthy profits. Christmas bonus don't make me laugh not even a card in 15 years, we have to pay for our own Christmas do and take the time off as annual leave. As for a stable job we have been through 5 rounds of redundancies. So do you believe that loyalty should not be rewarded?

Indeed, in a five year period, by moving around I went from being on 16,500 to coming back to the same job I left on 38,500. I would likely have been in line to get around 22,500 if I'd stayed, maybe 25,000 at the most.

I also got to come back in on a management program, with an improved bonus package, additional five days holiday, profit share, private medical and improved pension options.

Ones first loyalty should be to themselves and the people they love.

So your company is making loads of money yet making redundancies? Seems like you maybe over staffed then and lucky to have a job. If you feel unappreciated why don't you leave? or are they paying you enough but you would like to feel appreciated more, Perhaps you should ask them to reduce your salary by £1000 P/A and put in a minimim £1000 P/A bonus each Christmas into your contract so you feel warm and fuzzy inside when they give you a Christmas Bonus

Not a company I work for but a large retailer we supply.

I've heard, at 25 years of service, they receive 6 months annual leave, fully paid!!

I thought they were joking at first but more and more employees told me this was indeed the case.

The redundancies are as a result of being bought out and out sourcing to Poland (Which is a whole new subject) if they deducted money and the gave it back to you later it would not be a bonus? anyway thanks for your valuable input back to the topic
