My great grandad walked out of his job, it was the 4th night in to a cruise, he was on look out duty..... said he was too cold for this s***.

Never did hear from him again, still, i would have thought he'd enjoy the Titanic.

This was once a quality forum....

Take a deep breath and resist any temptation to react to provocation. Always sleep on it but if you've made up your mind to go take a longer-term view to suit your needs and don't give them any opportunity to sack you.

Use your sick "allowance" wisely and plan around it. Be aware of your rights and obligations. It can never a nice situation to be in but somehow it seems more bearable if you know you are screwing them as hard as they've screwed you!

And this is one reason why this country is going the s**t hole so fast.

Oh really, and of course you don't know what you are talking about because you've never experienced it. What would you do fold up and walk away for Queen and country? Give up and surrender because you don't give a to$$ about your self-respect and the welfare of your family? In over thirty years of loyal service I could probably count the total number of my sick days on both hands. If you are being bullied (which is effectively what it is) you need to keep calm, know your entitlements and play the game. Otherwise, you may suffer a longer-term illness, stress/ depression/ stroke/ possibly even suicide or by over reacting cause yourself other problems including even a disciplinary. Just one more comment ...are you a heartless Tory with the preconception that everyone is out to suck the blue blood out of the rich and effluent?

25 years ago was working in a shop and the manager who was a right b****** spoke down to me for the very last time, i punched him in the face and walked out. Went to the job center that afternoon and arranged a job interview the next day working in print got the job which paid a hell of a lot more than i was on. Manager did me a favor and i did regret hitting him but he was a bully and got away with it until then.

An in joke, or just a typo?

Anyway why don't you go and spout your socialist worker rhetoric outside the parliament buildings along with the other rent-a-mobs, at least then I can avoid it.

Deliberate but not original.

Your response is inaccurate and unjustified but you are probably just a pompous windbag with absolutely no consideration for anyone else's opinion or feelings. Get back into your straightjacket and live out your little fantasy that everyone is a lesser mortal than you.

Please don't read this if it offends you but it makes me feel better!

Many times...but I console myself with the fact that my lot get into a sweat when I walk into the office a couple of hours late and wearing a suit...which I do from time to time to make myself feel better...

Householder (Let’s call him Mr Average): Hello labourer man, I would like to employ you for 4 days to remove some rubbish from my garden.

Labourer Man (Let’s call him Mr Workthesystem): Sure thing. My rate is £200 per day.

Mr Average: Oh great, that’s £800 then.

Mr Workthesystem: Er no, it’s actually £1000, because by Wednesday I will be fed-up with you insisting I do some work that you are paying me for, so I will be taking Wednesday off sick, of course you still have to pay me for this.
Mr Average: Ok, that sounds fine and reasonable.

I've walked out of plenty of jobs. Truth be told I usually f***ed things up myself. I'm a bit better now. Been working in the same place for six years, although I am starting to get itchy feet.
I'm very argumentative which always causes problems with references. Top tip: get a friend in a high place to give you some kind of false reference. It worked for John Major, Gordon Brown and Roy Hodgson so you will be in good company.

Doesn't work like that with self employment. Mr Workthesystem has quoted for 4 days, at 200 a day = 800. If he takes time sick, he can only claim statuary sick pay under government legislation from the state (most won't bother).

Now the example is more like Mr Average approaches a company for the quote, the company will quote a fixed fee with mark up which will cover the 'costs of business' including staff pay and contractual obligations to staff. If someone is off sick, then that eats into the profit margins of the company.

But likely as not Mr Average won't directly foot the bill - although most companies will of course seek to offset operating costs, such as contractual obligations, through quotes.

Mr Average is also of course paying for company's contributions to things like pension schemes, maternity leave, sick pay, holiday pay where applicable.

Personally, I don't agree with false sick days, but most permanent employees probably will take a few over the year and its considered a 'cost of doing business' - Certainly when I was a permanent worker I took days off sick when I probably would have come in as self employed (I was sick, but the incentives of suffering are different when you work for yourself).

But also companies that f**k their employees over or treat them like s**t shouldn't be surprised or upset when their employees do the same in return.
