You said 'I expect Give and Villiers to fall on their sword as well'. Your implication is the IDS fell on his sword, as you were expecting g to do likewise.

Read the whole of that link then comment.

I believe there are two most likely reasons for IDS' resignation:

1. The EU referendum is a once in a lifetime opportunity for anti EU Conservatives to get their way on Europe. Cameron is disliked and largely despised by most people who identify themselves as conservative. IDS may well have looked to start a coup, with the view of installing a more Brexit friendly leader, i.e., Boris, before the referendum;
2. Say what you want about IDS but I believe that whilst he is ideologically to the right of the Tories he, unlike Osbourne, views that the benefits system should be used to get people into work rather than the source of cash Osbourne uses to facilitate cuts. IDS therefore resigned as he viewed Osbourbes cuts as ideologically against his views on how the benefits should operate.

However, I would say that there is a bit of 1. And 2. In his decision.

Now, you come across as the sort of privileged middle class psude, who likes to be viewed as 'progressive' (meaning you pay lip service to 'progressive' concepts, tut at those who disagree with your views and label them a 'phobe' of some sort) and would gladly sell out all the tradition and advantage this country offers its subjects in pursuit of being trendy. Therefore, if you would be so good as to answer my question, I would be much obliged.

You are spot on here. Osbourne is an idiot really. He had a good chance of beng PM and he's destroying it all by himself. He didn't even try to juggle cuts to corporation tax with cuts to the unluckiest, vulnerable and disabled. Nah, he favoured those with spare money and capital and let them save their spare cash and hammers those who cannot work, or will never be favoured vs those who can work 40 hours and move onto other company positions. Osbourne is completely out of touch. remove him or keep him and Cameron's chums will look more and more like they're helping they're own rather than interested in Britain collectively.

Very little conscience the pair of them.

What's actually been cut? I'm not undermining the impact it will have but I just want numbers rather than Googling only to be bombarded with propaganda of the sort where Cameron is responsible for deaths due to bedroom tax and this is going to be painted as genocide.

I think this is getting very interesting.

Cameron is fighting dirty over the EU anti Brexit campaign and getting all sorts of people involved to besmirch the reputations of the Out campaign's leading lights.

Ros Altman was on the news this morning sticking the knife into IDS.

One thing's for sure, In or Out result in June's referendum - the Conservative Party is splitting and there will be a leadership contest before the year is out.

Europe and the Conservatives - their classic division - Its cost them dearly before with the electorate.

Trouble ahead when we should still be focussed on reducing the deficit and balancing budgets whilst trying to maintain essential services. Given all the upheaval with other political parties in recent years you'd think they'd have wanted to steer a steady course instead of ripping themselves apart to pursue their self-interests?

I genuinely believe that IDS resigned for the reasons he stated, rather than the EU referendum. It's not exactly popular making these welfare cuts, but I think he has on the whole done a good job of it. I think the vast majority of the country agrees with his principal aim of "making work pay". It should never be financially better to not work than it is to work.

For him to then have to sell a disability benefit cut whilst there is a cut on, of all things, Capital f*cking Gains Tax, would probably break the patience of any Welfare Minister. To say this poxy Chancellor has lost the plot is an understatement. He should go, this is even more idiotic than the Tax Credits fiasco.

Good on him for not being afraid to put country before party.

I don't like IDS but like him a little bit more for doing this. It does seem genuinely a matter of principle no matter how warped that sounds considering we are talking about a Tory Minister (ex).

They normally wouldn't know what a principle was even if Victoria got on her bended and went deep.

I think you've called this correctly Michael.

You know my political stance and I'm very uncomfortable with what Osborne tried to do.

By all means reform welfare to try and reward the working to stimulate growth and reduce unemployment - but don't cut the benefits of the disabled to fund a cut in CGT that only benefits the well off members of society.

Somehow I doubt it. He wasn't an inspiring leader first time round and nothing much has changed as far as that goes
