The idea that all governments are in cahoots to cover up UFOs or aliens is ridiculous.

There is other life out there but the chance of it being intelligent and capable of producing the technology claimed is so tiny it's ridiculous. How many forms of life are on earth and yet man is the only one with technological capabilities.

Forgive me but that is the daftest statement I have read for a long time.
You, me or anyone else has no idea of the likelihood of intelligent life or it's capacity to visit Earth.
The Drake equation is so flexible that it is barely more than pure speculation and we just don't have enough information to make any assumption. Common sense is not much use regarding the totally unknown.

I suppose the issue isn't life an whether it exists elsewhere, but size and time.

The universe is so vast and has existed for billions of years. We have only been able to stick our ear in space for 50 years.

Indeed. until we officially discover life elsewhere,if we ever do, we are not even on the first rung of the ladder of any understanding.
We could be the only life form currently existing for millions of light years or there might be life all over the place. Will scientist be allowed to reveal what they know? That's another story.

The observable universe is billions of light years across. In that universe are billions of galaxies containing billions of stars. I can't believe that the Earth is the only planet in the universe with "intelligent" life.

I am sure there is other forms of life out there, some quite basic and others that are incredibly advanced, both evolutionary and technologically.

As for being visited by these advanced forms of life, I'm not so sure. If they are advanced enough to travel many light years to come here, why only give us vague glimpses of their visit?

We have the technology to work out the composition and atmospheres of our neighbouring planets using relatively small space probes that don't need to enter their atmospheres. Any visitor would have figured out our technology from afar, and if they needed "samples", I am very sure they would get them without our knowledge.

Stephen Hawking's view is that:

"If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn't turn out very well for the American Indians."

Me too funnily enough; one wonders if he has a tinfoil hat and is shortly to claim that he was once abducted and anally probed

No, but your comment does suggest that there is little intelligent life on Earth never mind the rest of space.
