There are over 100 billion known galaxies, with the boffins set to double that number as the technology to spot them improves. To think we are the only intelligent life out there in the universe is arrogant. Have we been visited possibly, did a UFO fly past ISS No of course it bloody didn't. However it did cause me to do some goggling of galaxies and the like at lunch time, and I have to tell you the distances involved are a massive head f*** LOL. the closest Spiral Galaxy to our own is the Andromeda galaxy which is over 2.5 million light years away. So if we have or are getting visitors I'd love to see there ship LOL Just to give you an idea, the imaginary speed of warp factor 9.9 of the starship enterprise would take 300 years to reach Andromeda travelling at 1000 times the speed of light. and BANG my heads gone.

Yep. 30,000 is the current travel time to the nearest star system. Longest continuous living organism on earth is approx 4500 years old and is coral. Complex organisms can only last about 200 years. We'd be well dead by the time we got there, so it's safe to say no one has visited us.
Optimistic as ever |

Also wouldn't we expect to see something like motor way service stations or stop off points. Its not like we'd suddenly invent the capacity to just travel anywhere in space instantly. You expect to see something representing a technological progression from being able to say jump distances or travel at speeds that allowed reasonable distances on a cosmic scale. When we built the real airplanes, they weren't capable of flying non-stop to f**king Australia, they could fly reasonable distances - and we built airfields and airports, to enable them to continue their journey. That's what I suspect our first proof of alien life will be, spotting the equivalent of a space Granada service station and Travelodge.

Also travelling at the speed of light would generally mean that by the time you went there, so much time would have passed on earth, that they'd probably have found a more efficient means to get there, and arrived long before you. Something of humour in Richard Morgan's books, is the fact that the first colony ships from earth arrived to find not only were they not the first ships, but that they were like cavemen arriving in modern London.

Sarah Palin does. That says it all. If you took away Hawking's tech, both him and tibbles are scoring zero in a verbal test. Not true, Tibbles is capable of around 40 different vocalisations, where as Hawking I believe is incapable of making anything more than a death rattle.
