Who is "you" as I certainly won't get anything tangible apart from a few years of upheaval whilst they build it followed by extra noise from a railway line that runs 200 metres from my home

People in rural areas living between 120m and 300m of the high-speed line can claim up to £22,500.

Spending on infrastructure in the UK is far better than giving it foreign countries, where most of it immediately goes missing.

Optimistic as ever

How do we 'monitor' the money after it is handed over and what are the penalties for misuse of it?

That's generally done by the embassy, the money isn't just transferred into some foreign banks, its typically assigned to specific projects and contracts, rather than being a cash bung that's handed over to the other nation to do what they want with it.

Foreign aid and loans schemes are generally tied to projects and western interests in the region, or paid to specific charities in terms of emergency relief.

The UK isn't giving money to the Syrian state for refugees, its likely funding charities operating in the region such as the Red Crescent.

But if they did that your money would be poured into a black hole, throwing good money after bad. At least you will get something tangible with HS2

I live in Bristol, so will get nothing tangible from HS2. We'll be left with something tangible- a white elephant too expensive for the plebs. And saving a whole 30 minutes travel time too!!! Worth the £40 odd billion

I'd rather have the extra funding for the NHS so it's there when (if?) I (and everyone else) need it, or social care, education, whatever.

Why not spend billions building a 300 foot gold statue of Queen Victoria in Slough- at least that would leave us something tangible too

By next year the government will be giving away (or squandering some might say) more in foreign aid than it gives to local authorities for spending on public services in this country according to this article:

so as care for the sick and elderly are cut, child protection is under enormous pressure and pot holes go unfilled, we will borrow yet more money to fund overseas aid.

It's a bloody disgrace and shouldn't be allowed. What imbecile believes that we should be throwing money at despotic foreign dictatorships whilst making our own go without? Ring fencing foreign aid??? They should be bloody bulldozing it
