Indeed, a waste of a three match ban. He should have smacked Craig Dawson in the face, for which I would have chipped in towards the fine.

There'd be a whipround to pay that fine off. Remember, we helped pay the St. John's Ambulance bill.

Whenever I see this sort of stuff I think how long they'd last in amateur unpaid and protected football pitches and changing rooms. Different arena.

Agreed. He's not only a nasty player, he's a cowardly nasty player. Cheap shots seem to be his preferred tactic.

Slightly off tangent, but an observation I've made for some time; Why is it that we as a nation always manage to vilify and dislike our most exciting prospects?

We did it with Rooney, Sterling and now Ali - probably the 3 best youngsters we've produced in the last 10 years. And we then wonder why there's a disconnect between the fans and players of the national side.

Surely this is just a case of a young player making a mistake in the heat of the moment? He's been punished and has duly apologised, surely that's the end of the matter? - some of the vilification on here and elsewhere seems very very excessive.

I loved Rooney when he first came on the scene but his ego and behaviour over the years have chipped away at my loyalty to him.

I compare his tantrums to lets say... Lampard who never let us down on or off the pitch.

Rooney could and should have been one of our greatest most successful players of all time, but took his eye off the ball.

Sterling was shaping up to be a good prospect but has gone off the boil. Not in the same class as Rooney was at the same stage and seems "money orientated"?

Alli is already establishing a flaw in his on-field behaviour rather than establishing himself as a great prospect first. He got away with a sly dig on Cabaye and then got caught having a sly dig at Yakob.

I hope Kane continues to evolve and better himself on and off field.

I don't think any of us genuine football fans delight in the public vilification of our young prospects or our established stars, but the media certainly seems to want to do that as it sells papers.

Back in the day even someone like Bobby Moore wasn't immune from it.

Yet Lampard was still publicly vilified and dragged through the mud, and as you say, his conduct was pretty much flawless throughout his career - that's what's worrying.

It's interesting you brought up the 'money-orientated' angle on Sterling, because that's the point I was trying to make. He's been branded as such by the majority of football fans in the country, when in reality, he made an obvious career choice to play for a better team. He's now a Champions League semi-finalist, so the decision seems entirely justified.

On Ali, he's already established himself as a great prospect - it's as good a first season in top level football as you're ever likely to see. Rather than celebrate in that, and the quite incredible things he's achieved this year, we cling on to one flaw in his game, and label him a 'massive liability' for it.

Let these kids make mistakes, and learn from them without becoming public enemy number 1, and we might actually end up with a national side who enjoy representing us.

Too many fans can't separate club and country.

Lampard was always booed by Wham fans and also by any fan who saw Chelsea as "new money" at first, and latterly as a club who was upsetting Arsenal, Man U & Liverpool etc by winning things.

Cole got the same from Arsenal and Newcastle fans, and anyone else who felt like joining in for him cheating on his wife or felt he was greedy - when, like Sterling, it was actually the right move.

Rooney and Beckham got sent off at finals (which then of course become the sole reason for our exits) and played for Man U, enough said.

Optimistic as ever

Of course we could turn that around and say "just because someone is very talented at kicking a ball around, should we her worship him even though he is clearly a nasty little turd"

I'm not asking anyone to worship him.

On what basis is he a 'nasty little turd'?
Hot-headed? Sure. Naive? Absolutely. But surely it's pretty normal for a 19 year old to be so? Everything I've seen from him off the field in interviews and social media activity suggests he's quite a decent guy.

Why do we not give him the chance to learn from the mistakes of his youth, without prematurely labelling him a 'turd', and maybe then the mutual respect between fan and player can go some way to being re-established.

only on the basis of the various unpleasant and nasty attempts at assault I've seen him pull this season ('accidental' kneeing of Cabaye from behind, a couple of really horrible tackles in other games which apparently mean he has "a bit of the devil in him". I don't mind 'hard' players, but players who go for cheap shots or set out to deliberately injure other players (Roy Keane for instance) are, in my opinion, nasty little turds who deserve no admiration from anyone.

Clattenburg should have sent off several Spurs players last night. Dirty, dirty team.

Check this out - it's quite amazing how they didn't get anyone sent off and the FA will be busy this week. Hope they lose 2nd spot.

In fairness to Clattenburg, had he sent anyone off the outcry against him would be worse in the media. They'd say that he decided the title race with his "red card decisions." The funniest one for me was when Lamela (?) trod on the Chelsea player's hand. He wasn't even looking where he was going. Classic mindless attitude.
