I just hope the many fans that turned up without tickets and forced their way in to create the situation don't feel exonerated by the verdict.

The evidence is exactly the opposite. The fans who entered through Exit Gate C had tickets. Those tickets were entered evidence at both the Independent Inquiry and the inquest. They are whole, the stubs are still attached. I say again, the approximately 2,000 fans who entered through Exit Gate C for the FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989 at Hillsborough Football Ground, Sheffield had tickets. If you dont believe me, go to hillsborough.inquests.gov.uk or hillsborough.independent.gov.uk and examine the documentary evidence, It's all there.

Come on now. You cannot honestly believe that all those ticketless fans (witnessed) had no bearing on what happened.

You seem to think you know better than those who have heard ALL the evidence, over the course of a 2-year inquest. Why do you think you know better than them?

Please read the relevant documentation from the urls kenbarr posted, then come and tell us what the facts are.

To be honest I think as I wrote in my earlier post that anyone who go out of their alive is as big a victim as those who died. They have had to live with what they saw and heard that day.

I went to a lot of Liverpool games in the 80s. My friends tended to support either Liverpool or Manure and there was a reason why football fans were treated the way they were. It was a god awful experience with a lot of trouble. Not just firms but anyone who was the oppo was a fair target.

That does not exonerate the police from what happened but I do think some people are looking back at the 80s using a rather wonky prism.

Again agree with this view point too. Anyone policing football matches in that area regularly experienced drunk, rude / abusive sections of football fans. Yes part and parcel of the job some would say but when you are used to dealing with a certain group of people or section of society you begin to form an opinion of them. Many of the police had a low opinion of fotball fans as a result ofwhatbthey were subjected to week in week ut. Cruhes were happening regularly at games. Several people here have commented to the effect that if it hadn't been Hillsborough at that semi it could have been another game there or another ground.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I'm sure there are other stories of survivor's guilt. I listened to Kenny Dalglish being interviewed by his daughter and you could hear the pain in his voice, especially when she asked him, Dad, did Hillsborough change you? He almost lost it.; Does anyone wonder why resigned as Liverpool manager in 1991 a few months after Palace beat them 1-0 at Selhurst? At the time, many thought it was due to less than stellar results. I truly believe he left because he could no longer be manager and the unofficial father confessor for the city of Liverpool, a role he and the other players took on. He was never the same, even when he managed at Blackburn. There was a sadness about him instead of a confidence. In some ways, Hillsborough broke him. Football was no longer a joy for him. It was a chore that no amount of money or prestige could compensate. I think the same could be said of Peter Beardsley, who anytime he was asked to come into the Family Lounge would jump at the chance. IEdited by kenbarr (29 Apr 2016 4.28am) know it haunts Bruce Grobbelaar, who said Hillsborough was the worst he had ever been seen, including his experiences in the Rhodesian (Zimbabwean) Army.

Sorry, Y Ddraig Goch, I accidently hit the edit button instead of the quote before.

The ESPN/BBC documentary "Hillsborough"

[Link]

If you get nothing else out of this programme, go to 1:40:54. Former PC Martin McLoughlin, who was later invalided out of the police, gives his reaction to his statement being edited for comments deemed "unhelpful" by his superiors. Here is what he said.

"They showed the statement I made, my Hillsborough statement. Well, there were two. There was the one I made and there was a second one with my name on it. The one I made had big lines crossing things out, entire paragraphs, altering sentences, altering phrases. Everything that had been removed from my statement were things that had been critical of police command at Hillsborough. And the statement that had been submitted under my name had been completely sanitized, but it had my name on it. That's (sigh) when I found out that I weren't the only one."

"Unless I forget my law, altering a person's statement is a criminal offense without their knowledge or consent. If you get a group of people doing that as a matter of policy or as a strategy, call it what you will. Now I might be an old washed up bobby but that to me that is still conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, which is a criminal offense.a criminal offense. I don't like criminals."

Senior police officials of both the South Yorkshire and West Midlands Police did the very same thing to over 160 police statements. It started with Duckenfield lying to Graham Kelly about how Gate C was opened. Then they had concocted the lie about dunk and fans with no tickets. Finally, they took the statements of their own officers and doctored them to suit their purposes rather than the truth. The inquest jury got it right. NO football supporter was responsible for the death of the 96, the over 700 injured and those who have to live the memories of that horrible day. The powers that be covered up their own incompetence, negligence and perjury. Then they compounded these offences by making their subordinates unknowing and unwilling accomplices.

Sorry Ken.... but how can you, the jury or anybody else be certain that EVERY fan that entered through gate C or anywhere else had a ticket?

Obviously those with tickets (including the stubs intact) would come forward to present their evidence to make the case that there weren't any ticketless fans at Hillsborough.

Those fans that were there without tickets (and trust me in the 80's there would have been hundreds) will be keeping quiet now... or... singing... justice for the 96, when ironically they helped caused the tragedy whatever you "deniers" say.

I lost count of the number of times somebody jumped in behind me at Selhurst, Stamford Bridge, Anfield, Old Trafford in the 70's/80's without my consent... they just barged me through the gap and got in before the operators could stop them.

No matter how many times somebody quotes the Jury's verdict on here it will not persuade me to change my opinion on it... and as for the assertion that no fans were worse the wear for drink? That is just simply naive in it's greatest form. There was evidence from a landlord of a local pub in the previous two inquiries.... I imagine he was either dead now or persuaded to retract it. Even so, common sense tells me that a hardcore of fans would see the day as an opportunity to get bladdered just as much as the opportunity to watch their team (with or without tickets).

For the record I do accept the other findings and agree that the police have a lot to answer for along with the FA and anyone else in authority, but you cannot ignore some of the fans behaviour (and I'm not including the victims in this who were totally innocent).

The evidence doesn't say that there were absolutely no ticket less fans or fans worse for drink, although the inquest did say that any of the 96 who had a blood alcohol content were both well within the legal limit. However, forensic engineers took the turnstile count for that end, added 2,000 (the number estimated by all sources that came in through Exit Gate C) and the sum total was close to but not over the stated capacity for the Leppings Lane end. It was therefore concluded that the stated capacity was too high, which is what made both Sheffield Wednesday & the engineering firm culpable in the jury's eyes.

As I said earlier, I had many experiences of both home and away supporters trying to crash their way into Selhurst Park without tickets, including attempted bribery. However, at Hillsborough, there was a concerted and deliberate attempt by the authorities to concoct a scenario where it was all down to drunks and the ticket less, which it was not by all objective evidence presented to Lord Justice Taylor, the HIC and the inquest. Plus, even if I were to believe it was not exaggerated, both conditions were foreseeable but not adequately planned for. I know this because SGT John Boldock (Ginger), who was part of the South Norwood police that regularly worked at Selhurst and later went on to the National Football Task Force, described the type of intelligence that all police forces did prior to major matches since Heysel. It was highly sophisticated and information was shared throughout the various constabularies, particularly the Met, West Midlands, the Yorkshire Constabularies, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. There were members of the Merseyside force at Hillsborough on the day. However, according to the HIC and the inquest, they were ignored by South Yorkshire and relegated to background duties. When it comes to the fan behavior issue, the bottom line is that old cliche, failing to plan is planning to fail.

Ken... glad to see that you do now acknowledge that there were both ticketless fans and intoxicated fans.

I'm not saying they were the major cause of the incident, just that they had a part to play in it however minor.

We have learned a great deal from this experience and it is sad that it has taken 27 years to get to the bottom of what really happened... the South Yorkshire police have behaved in a disgusting manner, not only at Hillsborough, but at many of the coal fields during the Miner's Strike and definitely their handling of the Rotherham Asian grooming/raping gangs.

It doesn't surprise me that some people believe that the Liverpool fans were entirely blameless but that is simply not true.

The trouble is that the reputation of the Police there has been irreparably damaged by their lies and deceit and are now not to be trusted.
