Well, this isn't a thread I'd expect to see on here...but I'm very grateful to the OP for starting this because I have exactly the same problem! Good to see everyone's thoughts so far.

Apologies for slightly hijacking the thread, but I am in a position to possibly remove the dado rail. Does anyone have experience of this? Is it likely that the room would need replastering?

If you have a small property either remove the dado ( or dildo rail as its known in trade) then fill the gap keft with toupreith.
Seal and re emulsion the whole wall as 1 colour only.
Otherwise if you are worried about the damage you can either just treat the dado as part of the wall and emo.it in with wall colour.
These off whites or muted shades work best.
Or again keep to 1 shade but use eggshell or sheen finish below dado which will give a gentle contrast due to sheen variation.

Was waiting to see how long it was before someone managed to sneak dildo into this.. if I am going to paint the dado the same colour as the bottom half of the wall do you suggest the darker colour at the bottom as previously suggested

looks a nice tidy job.
something very satisfying about some paint jobs.
This is my 33rd year working as a decorator & I still get some pleasure from the finished job(although not all the time!)

That cream rad was white once upon a time I am led to believe. Looked filthy when I compared before and after. Now need to do the rest of the room
