The Blades started well as Ndlovu struck his shot wide and Wayne Allison headed over Michael Brown's cross.

Matt Clarke saved Ndlovu's shot across the face of goal with his feet before the 30-year-old winger gave his side the lead on 18 minutes.

Michael Tonge dispossessed Shaun Derry in the middle of the park and he set up Ndlovu who fired into the bottom corner of the goal.

The Eagles wasted a chance to to back into the game when Neil Shipperley struck his penalty straight at Blades keeper Paddy Kenny after Dougie Freedman was "fouled" in the box.

It looked like he fell over after pulling his hamstring from his run into the box and had to go off injured.

Just before the break, Kenny had to be stretchered off after colliding with Derry and with no replacement keeper on the United bench, defender Phil Jagielka took the gloves and went in goal.

In first-half stoppage time, United doubled their advantage when Allison headed in Tonge's corner from close range.

Palace failed to test stand-in keeper Jagielka and should have made more of United going down to 10 men when Michael Brown was sent off for a foul on Wayne Routledge in the 66th minute.

Andy Johnson pulled a goal back for Palace from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after he was hauled down by down by Tonge.

But Palace failed to make the extra man count and lost to a battling, time-wasting Sheffield United side.
