Palace started well as Shaun Derry volleyed inches over the bar from Neil Shipperley's knock down and David James had to tip over Aki Riihilahti's header.

But the Hammers took the lead on 20 minutes thanks to a mistake from Michael Hughes. His weak back pass to goalkeeper Cedric Berthelin was pounced on by Jermaine Defoe and he scored.

Neil Mellor should have doubled the lead shortly afterwards after being put through by Defoe, but scuffed his effort.

He atoned for that missed opportunity when he put away Matthew Etherington's left-wing cross into the bottom corner in the 32nd minute.

Mellor got his second and West Ham's third goal on 56 minutes when he tapped in Wayne Quinn's cross unmarked at the far post.

James had to be alert to save Derry's fierce header before Defoe hit the post for the Hammers after a one-on-one with Berthelin.
