Abject Eagles lose away again

February 23 2011

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace continued their awful away form this season with a 1-0 loss at Portsmouth.

Anthony Gardner wasted a golden opportunity to put the Eagles in front early on. The on loan centre half nodded Darren Ambrose's corner over the bar when it would have been esier to score.

Portsmouth went close to snatching the lead in a fairly even first half through David Cotterill who skied over from close range after Julian Speroni came out to save at the feet of David Nugent.

The home side came out with renewed vigour after the interval and scored a deserved goal through Nugent in the 65th minute. Nugent volleyed a long throw into the ground and the ball bounced up and spun over the out-stretched Speroni.

Paddy McCarthy diverted Ambrose's cross wide from six yards out late on and the Eagles went home pointless, still looking for their first away win of 2011.

Portsmouth: Ashdown, De Laet, Halford, Rocha, Hreidarsson, Ward (Mokoena 90), Mullins, Hogg, Cotterill, Nugent, Kitson.

Not Used: Flahavan, Dickinson, Ciftci, Kilbey.

Palace: Speroni, Clyne, McCarthy, Gardner, Moxey, Scannell (Easter 73), Danns (Zaha 73), Dikgacoi, Wright, Ambrose, Vaughan (Iversen 82).

Not Used: Price, Davis, Barrett, Counago.
