Ten-man Crystal Palace slipped to a place outside the relegation zone after a 3-1 loss against Sunderland.

Palace captain Mile Jedinak was sent off for a second booking after lashing out at Jordi Gomez with three minutes left to cap a frustrating display for the Eagles.

But they could have had a dream start had referee Phil Dowd awarded what looked like a mailed-on penalty in the first minute when Santiago Vergini brought down Fraizer Campbell.

Then Sunderland went ahead just past the half-hour mark as Steven Fletcher headed in Patrick van Aanholt's left-wing cross after he was played onside by Brede Hangeland.

Dowd again waved away appeals for a Palace spot kick after Van Aanholt's challenge on Wilfried Zaha in the box and the defender was stretchered off with a suspected dislocated shoulder after falling awkwardly .

Palace levelled 10 minutes into the second half with a Wes Brown own goal as he tried to clear Campbell's back heel from six yards.

Gomez restored Sunderland's lead on 79 minutes with a crisp, left-foot shot from the edge of the area that arrowed into the bottom corner.

A frustrated Jedinak then saw red before And Fletcher made it 3-1 by firing in Liam Bridcutt's pass in stoppage time.

Palace have now conceded 18 league goals this season, only the bottom two (Burnley and QPR) have let in more.
