Team news

Crystal Palace skipper Mile Jedinak returns to the team after completing a one-match ban. Scotland international James McArthur is a doubt due to a calf injury. However, Kevin Doyle has overcome a groin problem that saw him withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad in the week.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is sidelined until the New Year after suffering another thigh injury. Forward Mario Balotelli and midfielder Jordan Henderson hope to recover from hamstring injuries to play.

Quotes

Roy Hodgson

"I think Balotelli’s a fantastic player but Rickie Lambert’s just as good, I think they’ve got different qualities don’t they. Whoever’s on the teamsheet is going to be hard for our lads at the back but I want us to cause them problems and not worry too much.

"Yeah, we’ll have to read the teamsheet but we won’t go too much into it. It’ll be more about what we’ve got to do really to get back into getting results – we need some points on board now.

"We haven’t been playing too bad, we just need to take more opportunities we create. We have actually been working a lot with the defence in this international break and it’s good we’ve had them in because we’ve had eight or nine others away.

"We’ve had so many players away and Yannick Bolasie only played on Wednesday. It’s been a bit fragmented really. But luckily we’ve managed to work on the defence as they’ve all been here. There just hasn’t been much else to work with."

James McArthur

"Any team in the world with miss Suarez. He was the best player in the league, in my opinion, last year. Defenders were scared of him and he had that fear factor that people didn’t want to get too close.

"And when they did get close he would turn and score. Obviously Liverpool miss him but any team in the league would.

"I have been running so hopefully I will train on Friday and Saturday and be available for Sunday. It’s feeling OK, I’ve been running with no problem. I did it in the game at Old Trafford. It was a bit sore in the first half and afterwards it just flared up.

"I went with Scotland, had a scan and was sent home. It was disappointing not to play, especially in the qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, but also against England."

Brendan Rodgers

"Daniel has just been extremely unfortunate. He’s a player who doesn’t want to be out for this period of time with the quality he has.

"I spoke to Daniel at length and he’s as down as I’ve seen anyone. We need to go away and find answers so he can perform consistently.

"He looked very, very good in training, but one strike of the ball caused the issue. It was a slight tear of the same thigh he’s had problems with before. It’s unfortunate for both Daniel and us.

"The 3-3 draw last season wasn’t the game that cost us. The damage was always done in the Chelsea game. That was the one that changed it for us. But on reflection I was extremely proud. Maybe the excitement to claw back the goal difference on Manchester City overtook us.

"It will be equally as tough against Palace this season. Neil Warnock is a wonderful manager with big experience. We will look to start off an exciting run of games with a win."
