Picking the perfect fantasy football squad

As most of us know, fantasy football can be quite the obsession if you manage to find the right group of people to play it with, writes John Winter.

It almost takes over your whole life as you get to live out your ultimate fantasy of being the manager of your own team. It's a pastime that's incredibly fun and can occasionally have a cash prize at the end that's paid in hard currency or put into your PayPal account by your fellow coaches.

So with that in mind I've came up with some tips for any budding fantasy football manager who wants to get started with this incredibly immersive hobby.

1: Make a squad full of players who'll definitely play.

It's quite the rookie mistake to pick players at random because what can happen is you could have an entire squad comprised of players who never leave the bench (we've seen it happen). So always make sure that you pick a player who's guaranteed to get some time on the pitch, and even then make sure that it's later in the season so you can make the most of them.

2: Keep an eye on the match-ups.

This is perhaps the most key feature of the planning stage of building a fantasy team because it will let you gauge how your line-up might perform. For example, a team like Chelsea is guaranteed to win their next four matches against weaker teams, which means you'll want to pick from their squad.

3: Balance your budget.

Just like the real Premier League when you're buying players, you want to make sure that you aren't forking out the majority of your budget for one or two guys just because they're recognisable. Try to spread the money and talent out, you want reliable goal scorers with a good points-per-cost value.

4: Don't trust your gut.

Every bookmaker or casino croupier will tell you the same thing; never go on a gut feeling. Sure you may feel good about something like a bet, or in this case a player, it doesn't mean you're right. Always go by stats, weigh up your odds and if there's a logical decision to be made then continue, if not just back away.

5: Know the score.

This is probably one of the most important things to remember when it comes to planning out your Fantasy Football squad as you'll have to keep on top of all current events with various players and teams like the transfer news, what future squad line-ups might be and if anyone's injured.

A good place to try out would be a few Fantasy Football websites, just like how you would on a site like jackpotjanebingo.co.uk to find the best bingo games. Official Fantasy Football sites will normally have a couple of extra tips and tricks to consider when you're planning your team.

You should also check out a few forums and fan sites as other more experienced Fantasy Football players will know things you might have missed. So when you're planning your Fantasy Football team, just keep a few of these top tips in mind and you should have a squad that will decimate the competition. Good luck!
