Quotes

Roy Hodgson

"I know the margins we were winning by last season – we only won 13 games all year. That’s unusual to then get to 10th place. Thirteen wins and the margins were small in about six of them. You reverse those six and maybe we are down.

"If we had gone into this season with what we had last season then I think we would be fighting to be out of the bottom six but with the improvements we have made we genuinely must believe we can be a mid-table team.

"When I sit down with Patrick Bamford, Bakary Sako, Connor Wickham, Yannick Bolasie – because teams are courting Bolasie – I can say to Bolasie, ‘Will you get a better feeder [of the ball] than Yohan Cabaye?’

"On the training ground the players can quite obviously see his quality – and therefore his presence. One of the reasons I really targeted Yohan was not just because of his playing ability but because of his professionalism off the pitch.

"We have a good team of pros here. But when you see a top technical player doing exactly all the things you need to do off the pitch then there’s an example to every young player at Crystal Palace and every player who ever passes through here will take a bit of Cabaye with him because he does that.

"I like to think he’s going to be our [Cesc] Fabregas – someone who unlocks the door in a tight game; someone who knows when to attack, when to keep the ball."

Alex Neil

"I knew my starting XI for Palace about a week ago, or at least a rough idea. You always approach a game with nine, potentially 10 players, that if they perform as they have been or they should then you expect them to play. That means there are always one or two places up for grabs.

"I have had an eye on Palace since before the West Ham friendly, in terms of how we go about it, who the personnel would be, but as always leading up to the game there is one or two positions when people can force themselves in.

"We’ve worked really hard to get here. The latter part of last season was such a big success for us and we will approach it in the exact same manner.

"We want to get off to a good start and that means a win, however, when I first went up with Hamilton we lost the first one and then won the next seven or eight. I would settle for that, but, no, seriously Palace is important to set our stall out and show everyone what we are capable of doing. By being a new team going up you can catch some teams off guard."
