With the news that PVA is set for a lengthy layoff with a dislocated shoulder, it raises the question whether we need to invest another left back.

Schlupp apparently doesnt see himself as a left back, Jairo is used there in an emergency if both PVA and Schlupp are out. That leaves just Mitchell.

Given PVA is out and Schlupp has only just returned from injury, if Roy goes with Jairo at LB it's a fair indication that Roy doesnt think Mitchell is upto it, at least for now.

Roy has been reluctant to use Jairo unless really stretched, which begs the question why is he still here ? Money ?

We already know we need another striker,a playmaker and a right back, and a winger if Zaha leaves. Given PVA's injury do we now need a left back as well ?

Unless these areas are addressed in the transfer window, I can only see an absolute dogfight to keep out of the bottom 3 next season.

Mitchell didn't look fazed coming on last night. He did one really good block and was calm in possession. I hope he starts against Wolves as it would show other young players at the club that if they work hard and remain patient they'll get their chance. I hope Pierrick gets a couple of sub appearances too, as he looked confident when he got his chance earlier in the season. As fans there is something special about seeing players come up through the rankings. I have continued to follow AWB for this reason (aside from last night, although he was largely absent anyway). PvA is a potent attacking threat for us, but if he wasn't quick he really wouldn't be that great of a defender in my view.

Roy will either stick Kelly there, or, put him at RB & swap Ward to LB.

That is the most probable and worse scenario.

Kelly's injured. JR will play there like he did earlier this season. Schlupp will be further forward.

He was, on the bench last night, could also see as you & others have suggested, happening, BUT, this IS Palace, so god knows(if he does, why ain't he the manager)

There was an interview with Freedman a while back where he said one of the discussions they'd been having was whether they need a new LB to compete wit PVA or can Mitchell do the job. Next 2 games should show which answer they decided on. If Mitchell plays both and does alright, we won't buy. If he doesn't start the next game we almost certainly will, and that's the end of Mitchell.

Anyone would think after 7 seasons and a billion quid an established premier league club would have adequate cover for all positions on the pitch...sod that, let’s continue with management incompetence at least it makes off the pitch proceeding interesting as what we’re seeing on the pitch is a load of bolllox.

Given we’re safe and based on his performance yesterday, I’d be happy to blood Mitchell for the remaining games. We’ve already lost 6 on the bounce, rather do it and get a couple of prospects some minutes.

We've got Schlupp, Reidewald, and Mitchell who can play left back. 4 competent options along with PVA.

A previous manager, had to make do with Kelly and Ward filling in for 6 months.

Even if theres an issue with them, there's Mcarthur who's covered it before.

It's not a position we need to worry about, but we should give Mitchell a go for the next two games.

We need to concentrate all our efforts into getting a striker. Then a right back. Then probably and attacking midfielder and a winger.

This has come at a really bad time for us with the injury to Cahill on top. Making the beginning of next season look even more daunting.

For all the (sometimes justified) critism of PVA defensively he's one of the few in the side that has the speed and intensity to trouble the opposition and has been one of the better players since the return.
