As I ripen with age I sometimes find myself reminiscing about the various phases in my life. I look back at my football playing years with very fond memories.

In the early eighties a couple of ex soldier friends of mine invited me to play for Norwood Victory FC, a British Legion just around the corner from Selhurst. At first the team was average at best but due to the amazing camaraderie amongst the group we started to attract some talented players, particularly our Goalkeeper who was playing in a league well below his ability.

Within a couple of seasons we were promoted from the Croydon Sunday league 12 to league 11 and then back to back promotions to the heady heights of League 9. We played at some interesting grounds such as Purley Way, Duppas Hill, New Addington, Ashburton and so on. During this period we somehow developed a fierce rivalry with a team called High View Fosa who matched us game for game. Thirty years on I apologise, unreservedly to the stocky (and lippy) midfielder who was far too agile to get in the way of my reckless two footed lunge.

I recall turning up to matches in the morning and feeling delighted that I could count at least eight players, enough to not forfeit the match. With stale beer breath we would make some kind of attempt to put up the nets and sellotape the gaping holes as the biased opposition linesmen checked our work. The over zealous referees just willing us to swear so as that we could get sent off for ‘foul and abusive’ language!

So what’s the point of this thread? Well, I would like to hear others experiences/memories of Sunday League football particularly as we hear about the ridiculous transfer deals that have taken place this January. Grass roots are what it’s all about. Enjoyment, friendships and the belief that we are doing something worthwhile…

Croydon Sunday League??Is it still going?
Many years ago I played in The CSL for a team called Mitchley Avenue who went on to become Glendale Utd this would have been from around 1972 onwards
Memories of freezing cold changing rooms, many with no showers, some without even running water..just what you need after a rain soaked match on Purley Way when you have been performing heroics in goal..lol
Pitches that were either rock hard with frost or ankle deep in mud, slopes on pitches like the foothills of the Himalayas, spending time before the match removing dog s**t from the goal areas...nice...
Referees like Gussy Gates who seemed to be around 70 years old or the oppositions manager who refereed 'fairly' . I remember one match on Purley Way pitch 3, right at the top end of Purley Way when the opposition in front of me were on the attack when Gussy Gates blew his whistle and stopped the match...puzzled looks all around ..then he caught up with play and waved play on as he was now up with play again..priceless...
So many memories of great days in the Sunday League... wish I could still play but age and injuries catch up with is all

Croydon Sunday League, that brings back some old memories. Back to about 1963/4 I think, when some pupils from what was then Heath Clark Grammar School (not sure if the school building even exists anymore?)formed a team under the name of Clareath. I was fortunate to play in goal for them for a few years. If my memory serves me well, the team got off to a bit of a shaky start, but went on to win a few division titles during my time there. About 1967 I transferred my allegiance to a team called Tulsa F.C. until, in 1969, due to work requirements, subsequently relocating to the quieter and less hectic North of England. My support of Palace has never wained and I still try and get to see them as much as finances and family allow, which is not very often unfortunately!!!

Blimey small world isnt it??
Used to go to Heath Clark Grammar School from 1965 -71
Played in the school 1st team Saturday mornings, Telecom FC Saturday afternoons then Glendale or Mitchley on Sunday afternoons, guess you could say I liked football
Didnt know that there was a team of old boys from there
I think the school was knocked down some years back, probably a housing estate now...

I was at Heath Clark from 1959 - 1964. Although I never really enjoyed it, apart from the amount of sport I managed to get involved in! Played in the Football, Cricket, Rugby Teams etc., anything to get out of going to lessons LOL! Just wish sport colleges etc had been around in my day!
Sorry to hear the site no longer exists. Probably wished at the time I was there that it would be knocked down and replaced with something decent!

happy days, I played for the midday sun and can remember the beer breath, the old ref who never got out of the centre circle, white horse oils (do they still us it) but most of all the laughs occasional scrape and running down the wing and being tripped up by a bloke on the line with a rottwieller. Oh the addington boys loved a laugh. Bless 'em

rusheslake would have played for Mitchley United who, when on their last legs, merged with Glendale United on Duppas Hill Pitch One - Mitchley Avenue were a different outfit who were run by Richard Carey. What year did the CSFL disband please?

And do any readers have league handbooks for Croydon Sunday, Thornton Heath and Croydon Leagues? And old Croydon Amateurs memorabilia for my club archives?
Dave Cooke became team manager for Glendale seconds as was there when I netted four against Catharine Wheel who had one Dennis Warren up front for twenty minutes. Palace fans will remember him!!

I played for Glendale for one season but I unfortunately can’t remember any other team members. Also played for Newton Heath in the junior leagues. One season for Appelgarth club ( it then folded having only won 1 game all season). All this would be about 1974-1976. ( junior league earlier which was Shirley and District))
Funniest memory was playing on a Saturday in Beckenham league for Croydon Strikers. At the time deliberate hand ball on the goal line was not an automatic red card. I pushed shot onto the bar but female ref awarded a goal and booked me. At half-time I discussed it with her (politely) as I thought if goal was awarded why book me. She stated “well I won’t award the goal then” I pointed out she could not cancel the goal. Next week relayed story to the ref and unfortunately I was less than complimentary about the lady ref, his reply “ oh that was you, she is my wife” we lost that match

Played in CSL for many seasons, had many great times with all the rest of the boys, some really great laughs, all the practical jokes and wind ups
I do remember playing on the Purley way, changing in the swimming pool changing rooms at the bottom. The opposition changing next to us all of a sudden two of there players had a right tear up, blood and guts everywhere, old bill turned up, game off. Apparently one of them was playing away with the other blokes misses.

Purley Way on an ice cold windy day was most enjoyable

I played Morden and District so unable to reminisce.
I used to enjoy Sunday football though especially when you came up against a team who had all been to the same party the night before which meant that 14-0 wasn't unheard of.
Happy days!
