You may be interested that i enjoy the company of lawyers from time to time, in a purely social capacity . They are mostly foreign lawyers studying facets of English law at University, because, as they put it,.."British Law has its faults, but it is held in the highest regard in other countries because it sets a very high standard that other countries try and aspire to." (or words to that effect)

Colin Stag may not appreciate those comments, but in the main I'd like to think all UK prosecutions are without political influence or intended malice. Not so in the fantastic U S of A

Yup Many judges are political which leads government and the opposition (other parties / activists / groups) to shop around for a friendly judge.

Trump haters trying to stop his anti immigrant / wall policies found a judge in Hawaii instead of using one in Nevada / Arizona / New Mexico which are on or close to the border.

I don't want to turn this into another Trump thread my point is simply if you want to get a result in court and you have resources you shop around. That doesn't seem fair on those who can't afford to do that.

High Court decision today.
read the differing takes from the BBC website :
"Two judges at the High Court in London said they would give the United States government three weeks to provide assurances that Assange could rely on the First Amendment to the US constitution (which protects free speech) and that he would not be prejudiced at trial or sentence by reason of his Australian nationality; nor would he be sentenced to death if convicted. According to the ruling, a decision on the appeal has been adjourned to 20 May "

Stella Assange says she is "astounded" by the court's decision to delay her husband's appeal.
She reminds people that Assange has been held in Belmarsh prison for almost five years without charge adding the judgement highlights Assange "remains exposed to the death penalty"
"Yet what the courts have done is to invite a political intervention from the US," she adds.

Ruling says US extradition request 'not politically motivated'

We all know, having seen the Shenanigans over Harry Dunn's death, the the UK is politically and legally the USofA's biatch.

Assange is going to have an accident while in custody.

My view on the Assange issue took a 180 once my understanding of how the world really works formed....which isn't what I was raised to believe in.

So yeah, while I probably disagree with Assange socially I suspect he has been subject to state prosecution motivated by intelligence and security animus rather than justice.

I am puzzled. Exactly what do you think is unreasonable in the ruling by the High Court Judges? They have access to a great deal more than we do and their careful approach seems perfectly reasonable to me. Seeking reassurances that his rights will be protected whilst ensuring he answers and defends what he is accused of makes perfect sense.

I think he is a piece of s***e who deserves everything that's come his way but also that he is entitled to be able to defend himself and that we are entitled to demand answers before extraditing him.

This could not happen in reverse; the USA would not extradite to the UK.

We should never have enabled this saga to even start.

We only had to make some excuse and park him somewhere.

Why he is in Belmarsh is a crime in itself, he should be living a normal life.

Assange trusts English justice well look what it's done to him.

Architect of his own downfall. Ran away from the Swedish justice system then ran away to the Ecuadorian embassy from British justice. He's been in gaol because he keeps running away.

If he had showed up at court and made his case he would be on bail and who knows he might have won. No sympathy.

In many ways I agree, however, if Assange were walking around freely would he be fine? What about other charges against him - true or not? What do you think might possibly happen? And there is, of course, the pragmatism of the US/UK relationship - how would it be affected?
You genuinely think the US would just leave it there?

Get him extradited to the USA and let them lock him up for a very long time…which is what he will get and what he deserves. Zero Sympathy.

I guess that's the cheap option.

He must have cost a fortune in board and lodging at HMP. I wouldn’t be bothered about him being extradited at all. Think he’s taken the piss out of everyone.
