Latest idea from the government is to pay £500 to ensure infected people self isolate.

I simply do not understand why this would work. If someone who knows they have the virus is stupid enough not to self isolate why would paying them make a difference.

The real issue is lack of enforcement that is the problem to solve. The idiots will take the money and still go out.

I had the exact same view and am hoping that this really has no basis in reality. Surely it would be just as likely to cause people to intentionally contract it, or get someone positive to take the test for them for free £££.

Also, as you say having a positive test doesn't imply that a person will automatically self isolate anyway (especially the kind of person looking for what they may view to be easy money). And there so many asymptomatic cases, are ideas like this really going to make a difference anyway.

The sad fact is that many methods of slowing the virus that work when the numbers are very low, do not work when they aren't. Where we're at basically nothing works aside from lockdowns and even they function at a snails pace, hence why they are so desperate for the vaccine to make a big difference.

It's really unfortunate that the numbers are so out of control just as the vaccine is rolling out. A friend of mine works in an OAP home and it spread like wildfire there just after xmas - with a couple there passing away. She caught it too and brought it home to her own elderly Mother who unfortunately I have just been told didn't make it either. They had vaccinated the staff and I believe elderly in the home just prior, but it just wasn't long enough for it to take effect.

Not in cabinet but around it, although not entirely relevant to my opinion in this scenario. Being realistic that’s how I see this playing out, for multiple reasons

If anyone thinks this current winter is ‘it’ then I’d love to hear how they’ve come to that conclusion. I can’t see how you’d think we just need to get past this winter and it all miraculously disappears forever

BTW I missed May - Nov, can see things opening up almost fully for at least a few months in summer. But I’d expect some level of gathering limit and distancing to apply. eg 1m+

As expected she shares your view. Or you share her’s. Make the cure even more worse than the disease. Finish loads of aspects of life and livelihoods off. Last year in the summer we remained in lockdown with hospitals doing nothing while they were empty. Some people have lost their sanity over this but remain in financial safety and comfort while others face ruin. I was for a temporary lockdown this time, to get to the point hospitals were managing and the people who were truly vulnerable, and not just more vulnerable than average, are vaccinated.

400-person wedding party in Stamford Hill broken up by police - [Link]

It's ironic that a wedding is an event designed to bring both both family and community closer, and yet they've recklessly held this party at such a time that will likely result in the knock on effect of multiple deaths.

£10k fine is f*ck all for someone who could afford 400 people at a wedding.

And giving £500 to people that self isolate wont work, those likely to break the rules will be even more likely to do it if you fill their pockets with cash.... maybe it could work as an incentive at the end of isolation if they answer every track and trace call and nothing gets flagged up.

These fines are to all intents and purposes just a stunt as people are not paying them from what i can tell - nor will they ever.

So as we tick over the 100,000 deaths mark, with half of those in the last two months, does anyone think the Government are doing a good job?

Helps with housing targets and frees up public transport. Gets rid of bed blockers in the NHS. Hell, it could be a good policy.

State pension pay outs considerably less too.

And every one of those people would be delighted to know their death meant you could use them to criticise the government on a football site. Still, when this is over you’ll have the unemployment figures resulting from lockdowns to crow about. Every cloud, eh?

So the government aren't allowed to be criticised for their part in overseeing over 100,000 deaths?

I'm not crowing whatsoever. I'm unspeakably angry.

Should the NHS be criticised for their part?
