Doh! I knew there would be a good explanation. I wonder whether the same will apply to my question about the four league games against Wolves.

Yes, another "doh" moment. Two games in May against the same opponents should have immediately told me that they were the two legs of the play-off semi-final, not league games - though that's how they're designated in the Match Database on this site.

It was against Forest actually. Regards, Statto

Very long time ago thought it was Wolves but obviously not.

Got me thinking about other very bizarre incidents over the years. Anybody think of any. Freddy Sears and Clive Allen disallowed “goals” come to mind. Also remember playing Fulham (I think) the game finished everybody went down the tunnel, then the ref brought them back out and played another 3 or 4 minutes

There was an FA Cup game at home to Leeds way back in the Eighties I think where we lost 2-1. But we scored when the ball clearly crossed the line & a Leeds cheater booted it back into play. It was shown on TV even if I remember rightly.
So if that goal had been given we would've got a replay or extra time @ least. Anyone else recall that or am I dreaming everything?!

Here’s one for the oldies amongst us...
I seem to remember (in the 60’s I guess) an incident with Palace character Bobby Kellard.
He’d been having a running battle with an opponent and it ended with the other player fouling Kellard and the standing over him in a threatening manner.
Kellard then reached up and pulled the guys shorts down.
Both players, the referee, and the whole crown dissolved in laughter.
These days they’d both have been sent off I guess.
Anyone else remember this, if so who were the opposition?

I remember that, replays showed the ball was well over the line...was it Tommy Black that would have scored ?

I believe a Leeds player Harry Kewel? handled as it went in so it was either a goal or a penalty.

Tommy Black would have been the scorer, and my recollection is that Michael Duberry handled the shot a good yard over the line. Dermot Gallagher was the referee. I was in the Arthur Wait and in line with the goalposts that day, and also right behind the linesman who failed to spot the 'goal'. Harry Kewell scored the winner for Leeds.

There's another incident I recall - of very little interest compared with the others that have appeared in this thread, but 60 years on I can still see it. We were playing Torquay, and one of their players hit a long ball out to their right winger. It was hit too hard and was about to fly over the winger's head when he decided he might as well jump up and catch it, to save it going into the crowd. He sportingly tossed the ball to a Palace player to take the throw and appeared slightly miffed when the ref rightly ordered a free kick to Palace. As I say, not very interesting, but I've never seen anything like it again.

I have, plenty of times.

Not in the way you described that time, but players trying to stop a corner, throw-ins etc. The most common & really since the start of the EPL is the falling on the floor, pretending to been fouled & scooping the ball back with their hand/arms, thus preventing quick free kicks, disrupting play & such like, they call it 'gamesmanship'

Going back to the Wolves game, we lost 2-0 and if we had played all night we wouldn't have scored, hence me leaving early for the only time. I remember sitting in the old stand near the corner where it happened. I wouldn't normally be there but I was using a friend's season ticket. The seat was near Sean Hughes who is sadly not with us anymore.
There was another incident in that game, the game was mostly being played in our half but a promising counter attack was in motion, our centre forward found himself with a clear run from the centre circle with the ball. He had been fouled by a wolves defender but not enough to stop him. The ref was waving play on but he didn't see him so he just stopped and picked the ball up. Free kick to wolves for hand ball. From what I can make out the game was played on 7th February 2002 which was a Thursday night, can't think why we would be playing on a Thursday.

Another strange incident I can recall was from probably the early 90’s home to Oldham, the ball was going out for a corner to Oldham when the ballboy picked the ball up about a foot before the ball crossed the line (which in it’s self is very unusual as most of them don’t get off there arse) at the Holmesdale end. Ref gave a drop ball and a warning to the young lad.
