... and what was the lino doing, has he (or she!) not have a say on these matters as they used to have before GLT?

I don’t think the positioning or concentration levels, by the assistant referees, for this type of decision, is anything like what it used to be. They rely too heavily on the (flawed) technology nowadays and they just aren’t alert enough or focused on this type of thing. I’d include penalty decisions here too as they know the technology is there to take the responsibility off their hands.

We’ve seen a similar thing with ‘No balls’ in cricket and the umpire relying on the technology post event, rather than focusing like they used to, at the point of delivery.

Important VAR news!!

The Premier League have lost control of the Video Assistant Referee after FIFA took full control of the technology protocol.

The VAR supremo will be none other than Pierluigi Collina, remember him? The bald italian ref regularly officiated in the top games, only retired because of age.

He will want everything to be uniform.......

That means referees consulting pitch-side monitors which we have not seen here.

About time. Collins was a good ref, in addition to which he had a stare which could curdle milk.

Apart from the other night in the Leicster game.

I put my trust in Collina rather than FIFA.

Me too. How did Tarkowski not get a red card?

I believe I mentioned on HOL, before VAR was introduced to our game, that it was not a panacea and there would still be debate because of the subjective decisions which would be made.

I'm sure you did.

However overall I think it has been a good thing because those blatant errors have largely been irradiated as has the perception of big team bias.

It's true that mistakes are still made and some decisions will always be subjective, but it was ever thus.

Hopefully Collina will now set some standards across Europe.

There has been mention of a standardisation of on-field referees referring to pitchside monitors.
Currently in the PL, referees only do so in respect of potential red-card incidents.

Whether referees refer to monitors or the VAR gets involved, at the end of the day they will be making subjective decisions and of course these trigger conflicting opinions.

The Premier League admit three VAR decisions wrong last night, that's quite an admission.

I have only seen the referees consulting pitch-side monitors during the last World Cup, it was long-winded and seemed to take over.

The match is already held-up so I think enough is enough, the English fan wants an instant correct decision and that has to come at a price.

The VAR gave an instant decision against Kane's demand for a penalty and it was unanimous in the media that they were wrong.

I don't think so, the defenders eyes were on the ball not Kane and Kane was kidding the ref, I think that's what the ref thought too.

So there we go!

Wasn’t it used at Selhurst against Derby when Luka was sent off? And at Leicester the other night?

You are absolutely correct.
This was the first time that a referee referred to the pitchside monitor in England. Michael Oliver was the referee and he sent of Milivojevic.
