Brighton's net spend in the latest 'Window' was just north of £2.5 Mill.Probably less than ours!

No, ours was a profit of just under a £million.

In fact, you have to go back to 16/17 when our net spend was minus £53M and there's was only minus £8M; but given they were in the Champ that season, hardly surprising!

Net spend last 5 years has been minus £53M for us and around minus £200M for them which, given one of those seasons they were in the lower league, perhaps gives some perspective.

As irritating and "FFS only Brighton" as some are posting, they have invested far more than us over the years BUT still always end up beneath us come season end. It's a shame people don't pause to consider that when sticking in the boot.

BTW of the stats you posted up the thread, shots on goal is a good stat to throw at the club. Possession is not. Being 20th in possession does not = 20th in the league. How much did we give manure and look at that result? I don't recall you spitting feathers on line after that game. We always cede possession. It's a game plan that works very well for us.

Where it all went wrong yesterday was that, while in defence we were superb and unlucky to concede, the 2nd part of the plan of hitting on the break was non-existent. After all, that is the point of scoring early. The other side have to come at you leaving them exposed at the back. For that the team deserve all the brickbats and no mistake.

And it looks dreadful.

You mentioned "Shots on goal", we only had 1 shot on target yesterday and that was from the penalty spot! This season at home, 5 shots on target in 3 games including the penalty yesterday.

Possession stats can be viewed in different ways of course. I understand the argument of ceding possession but when we have averaged 35% at home in our 3 games this season it is hardly surprising that supporters are calling for more ambition.Besides when we DO get the ball we can hardly string passes together as we are not used to having it ! Furthermore it is a long way to the opposition goal from our own half!

Finally when one wins a game there is less inclination to be critical but the fact remains we don't win a whole host of games because our scoring record is so poor due to our style of play.

Yep, and I'm sick and tired about hearing how well Everton are doing, our game against them had nothing to do with them beating us at all and in actual fact we had them in that second half, the Chelsea game was full of nasty niggling fouls from them and us defending in the second half like the boys brigade in a hurricane and as you say today if the offside was just a cm back it would've been in the bag.

didn't create one good chance

The 'Brighton and Hove Independent' has predicted that Brighton will finish in 13th place with us finishing 15th.The relegated teams are Sheff Utd,Fulham and WBA.

That ' newspaper ' makes The Argus look like a good, well informed read.

And that takes some doing !

quote from the BBC:

"Since Opta began recording shot data in the Premier League in 2003-04, Crystal Palace are the first team to have had just one shot in a match in the competition and for that shot be a penalty."

Abysmal as a spectacle and was barely disappointed when the weeds scored their deserved equalizer. Never ever a pen either of course but I have given up hope that any good will come from VAR.

Not sure what's worse, holding that record of 1 shot on target being a penalty yesterday, or the 1-0 win against Watford the other season when we didn't have a single shot on target all game but won it with a Deeney own goal.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

I'm not happy. Its awful. And anyone who hopes and prays we suddenly morph into man city by the weekend just because we are away against the division's poorest team are in for serious disappointment.

The reason I am reluctantly sanguine is because roy is very good at % football and getting a poorly stocked squad comfortably over the line.

The alternative is to seek to play the more expansive game we all crave which given the relative weakness of our squad can have only one consequence.

Thus I personally prefer dross over relegation which at any time is catastrophic but in current economic circumstances could finish a club like ours.

A short term hit for long term gain and regrettably short term probably means to end of next season.

Just not reality.

Can’t be bothered to debate the specifics again, but the notion that the only way this squad of international footballers stays in the Premier League is to play like that is just so silly.

Every single team in the league plays more expansively than us, without exception. We’re not even close to the worst squad.

Yes it was dreadful. We allowed Brighton to take the initiative from the start and then we were always second best. We missed the industrious Ayew. Batshuayi is a better finisher but not so good in open play although this should improve the more he plays. We have not replaced Cabaye a genuine ball player and McArthur and Riedewald are to similar to be really effective. I think we should appoint Eddie Howe as manager and keep RH on to organise the defence that Eddie is not that good at.

Good idea except that leaves Roy dealing with 10 players and Eddie chatting to Wilf

As one of Roy's biggest advocates on here I can offer no defence for yesterday and think the only decent thing to come out of the game was that we didn't lose which feels an odd thing to say after conceding so late.

Although Mitchell has done well I think Roy needs to address the lack of attacking support / intensity from the full backs and bring both Clyne and Van Aanholt in.

I also think Bats would fare better in a 433.

Despite Roy's comments I still don't think the squad is particularly strong. The ageing players from last year are another year older and so many are out of contract at the end of the season we will need to find a fortune to replace them.

As far as the entertainment side of things goes I'm not honestly that bothered if we get enough points to stay up comfortably and get the occasional win against the big six and our rivals.

Why start a post with that line and then bother to debate?

Anyway we probably agree on more than you realise. Thus note my comments that I have no issue with strong shape and defence and hitting on the break but this requires us to actually try to hit on the break. Who cares how many shots so long as there's are rubbish and ours go in; but we need to have more than one!

On subject you overstate how good our team is. You really need to see how the other teams have pulled away in terms of squad improvement that has led us into relative decline. Note how much Brighton have invested over how much we have and please dont spout the old stuff about buying quality over quantity.

Also I note that those who (correctly) complain about our poor performance in the transfer windows are often the same posters who blame roy for our poor performance on the field.
