Labour have a rich history in financial mismanagement, whilst in power, its nothing to do with Covid. They have been going down the plughole for years.
The three main people, Council Leader, Finance Officer and Chief Excutive have all resigned and walked away, doubtless awarding themselves a hefty pay offs and gold plated pensions.

Looking around me in Croydon it has been locked down for over 6 months more or less.

The council has done well to maintain essential services.

But whatever political persuasion they are, they will not be collecting revenue anything like they need.

I think this must be widespread.

There is no alternative to the government making good.

And it is a type of poetic justice as they have been over-loading their responsibilities onto councils in the name of their flawed austerity policies.

How have we benefitted? Not at all over 2 trillions in debt.

Is there a vaccine for stupidity? I'd get in the queue if I were you.

They waisted all that money searching for a vacine when they should have been planting magic money trees.

Britain under Labour - broke
TfL under Labour - broke
Croydon under Labour - broke.

Who in there right mind wasted £50m on an out of town shopping centre in 2018.

Firstly these corrupt scumbags shouldn't ever be allowed to hold Public office again & secondly there should be a audit as to where the money has gone exactly?
Councils should only be allowed to deal with street lighting, potholes, garbage collection & the likes, but too many of these scumbags (& I include other political persuasions as well) treat being a councillor akin to running a private fiefdom.

For many years, there have been too many clowns in the circus we call the public sector. They should be held to account for their acts of gross financial mismanagement not allowed to run away with gold plated pensions.

Not often I agree with you Jim

Years ago I worked with every Local Authority in England. They were incredibly mixed in their abilities. The worst by far were the Authorities that had been under the same party leadership for prolonged periods.

Whilst sometimes I have no choice, I am always extremely cautious about hiring people from Local Authorities. They tend to hire weak people and then not manage underperformance properly. Sorry to anyone reading this that works for a Council, you are obviously the exception.

My dealings with local authorities is extremely poor.

The commercial realities are combated with jealousy and over zealous attitudes.

They forget that it is private individuals and entrepreneurs who pay their salaries. Policies, procedures, red tape, middle management, cosy pensions, arrogance and selfishness are all there.

Where do people think the money comes from; it is incredulous.

I fully agree with most of the views on here that years of incompetence, likely corruption and individual vanity have led Croydon Council to this point.

Over on cpfc.org/BBS/ Peoples Popular Front of Penge the blames lies squarely on the " cuts " with only one or two dissenting voices pointing out the council's actual failings.

I have no idea what happens from here in terms of the future if you live in Croydon and need the services

Somehow those individuals who self enriched need to be bought to account

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

The council has been run by morons for 10 years.

While it is a valid argument to say Croydon is underfunded compared to other boroughs (compounded further by its size and large population) and therefore other streams of income and investment had to be found, pouring money into property building and investment might seem like a good idea but only if it’s handled by people that know what they’re doing.

Buying a failing (now failed) hotel and a low footfall semi-suburban retail car park with atrocious locational appeal and poor transport links is mental. Even worse when you enter a pandemic a few months later, and that’s just for starters.

The whole Westfield thing has ended up a disaster - but in a way, I feel a bullet has been dodged as the direction of travel is more experiential and less retail led, creating destinations that entertain and accommodate first supported by retail, rather than the 2000s Westfield model of retail first. I believe that is where the plans will end up - residential with leisure entertainment and restaurants as the focus. Stratford and Shepherds Bush are going to have interesting decisions to make the other side of this era.

Hopefully with the reality of the cap on spending and some people being hired that actually know what they’re doing in 5 years there will start to be more of an upward trajectory rather than a stagnating one.

There is an opportunity here, but it’s probably unlikely to be fully embraced.

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.

Self-enrichment is a big claim. I am more inclined to cock up than conspiracy, after all this is local government. Or do you have proof?
