Having played right back in my 'brief' career, i was always told, if the ball goes past you, the player doesnt. It worked, never got booked either.

Yes. It was one of the pet phrases.

The man goes by or the ball goes by but not both.
Always turn out not in.
Never pass square across your own box.

Without getting too �jumpers for goalposts� about it the game can�t be much fun to play now. I don�t remember opponents flying through the air after a foul; they would sort of hobble to a halt with much swearing and threats of dire retribution. After the game if necessary.
