"As The Archers celebrates its 70th anniversary, the incredible June Spencer recounts the early days of the world’s longest-running continuing drama. A member of the original cast and still acting in the programme today, June reveals how she found out she had a part in The Archers from a stranger and what led the programme's founder to threaten to sack her." (BBC website)

A stain on my memory is Mr Coombes, my history teacher. A fantacist who took photos of girls in their night-dresses whilst leading a school trip to Russia in 1985

His greatest "Claim to Fame" (apart from not being questioned by police) was to have a speaking role in The Archers as a relative of Eddy Grundy for one episode.

Who the hell would actually admit to having anything to do with 'The Archers'?

And to call it a drama?

Should have been pulled in the early sixties - where it belongs. After all, they binned 'Mrs Dale's Diary'.

That’s all very well but I’m still worried about Jim.

"BBC Radio 4 will mark 70 years of The Archers with a series of features across its output on Friday.

As well as broadcasting episode number 19,343 of the world's longest-running serial drama, stars from it will appear on the station's other programmes.

This will include inserts into Woman's Hour, Farming Today, and a quiz.

The Archers, set in the fictional village of Ambridge, began in 1951 with the original purpose of educating farmers on modern agricultural methods.

The show's editor, Jeremy Howe, said its achievements over the years, coming up to the modern day, are incomparable." (BBC website)

I wonder if Mr Coombes will make a come-back ? If he's not dead.
As for educating farmers, did the Archers give guidance on shooting travellers who are thieving from their barns ? Was it helpful during the BSE pandemic ? what help to Welsh sheep farmers during the Chernobyl fall-out of cesium was it ?
Or given that farmers is a high-risk occupation for suicides, perhaps it was able to assist in 'doing a proper job'.
