Since I've been little and started following the game back in 1977,and especially pre 2000, all I ever heard was the media fawning and falling over themselves in adoration and praise of Pele. It was like he was some sort of messiah. Children and even adults were brainwashed into believing that Pele was a divine footballer. They still are brainwashed. Pele lived up to his messiah status by turning upto publicity shoots for charity events and so forth.

I don't know if anyone here really didn't get bought into the hype. I must admit that I started finding him really creepy back in January 1990 when he presented this series of programmes about the game. Beginning of each episode he'd be in a sunny Maracana and half the programme was all about adulation of himself. Talk about hubris! Think it was on screensport or Eurosport

Great question! I'd say Iniesta and Bergkamp come close too.

I always enjoyed watching Ronaldinho play. Eusebio was top class too.

To answer the OP No he was a great player.

Of course he was hyped up and he has a big ego but that doesn't mean he wasn't a great player.

It's always worth noting that when they ask ask ex professional footballers he is always in their lists.

I am enjoying being back at Selhurst and having a beer with my mates just like we have done for the past 40 years. Through Thick and thin we stick with our club. Not chairman, players or managers, OUR CLUB!

One of my pet subjects.....and yes I do think he is/was an overrated charlatan. 1000 goals scored in his career? Really? If you work out how that can happen it means he had to have scored over 60 goals a season. Now, if you count all the games of 3 and in that I've played, I might come close so maybe that's what he's counting too.

If you ask anyone what their main three memories are of the genius Pele, they usually say (in no particular order) the header against Gordon Banks (he missed); when he dummied the keeper and went the other side to shoot at an open goal (he missed); and the shot from the half way line against the then Czechoslavakia (guess what, he missed). There will be the odd one that remembers him scoring in the 1958 or setting up Carlos Alberto for the 4th goal v Italy in the 1970 Final which I still suspect was a misplaced shot from him in any case.

After he'd retired they gave him the chequered flag to wave at the Brazilian Grand Prix. You've guessed it. He missed the finish because he was talking.

And then he advertised erectile dysfunction tablets. Why? Because he couldn't score, that's why.

And don't even get me started on all the signed shirts that have been auctioned around the world. The only thing I've seen more of are splinters of wood from the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified in Catholic churches across the globe.

Other than that, I've no strong opinion on Pele.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.
