Premier League VAR changes. 1.Benefit of doubt given to the attacking player. 2.Thicker lines used to determine offsides. 3.VAR team won't intervene for “trivial offences” 4.Slight contact in area won't lead to penalties. 5.Accidental handballs by team-mates unpunished. 6.Viewers won't see images of decisions. 3 Aug 2021
What, for example, constitutes 'a trivial offence'.

I'm encouraged that the interpretation will be much better under the new rules and it was discussed a few days ago on the 'VAR at it's worst' thread. This feature which appeared on the BBC site explained pretty well that the 'trivial issues' were things like offside decisions arising from a knee or elbow over a very thin line and taking 2 or 3 minutes to decide, during which time all spontaneity and excitement of the moment were lost. We have to hope that referees will take more control of the game and use their experience and nous to make decisions that could effect the natural flow of the game. We'll see. A "trivial offence" will be one committed by Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs or Arsenal against a "lesser" club, whereas the similar offence committed AGAINST one of those six clubs by a "lesser club" will be a "non-trivial offence".

'slight contact in the penalty area' sounds just great but will inevitably lead to all sorts of different interpretations. If the idea is for the ref to have more say then why not do just that and not have the VAR 'rigmarole' at all.

The line drawing absolutely has to go, more than anything else. Either they design a computer than can make an immediate decision or they decide that if it's not immediately obvious to the naked eye on a still image that the attacker gets the benefit. On a side note, I've been meaning to ask for others opinion on here. I've always known the offside rule to be "any playable part of the body" yet we've seen offsides given for arms, hands, even shirt sleeves last season. Has the rule been changed??

As others have posted my main concern is that we will no longer see the pictures. I think this is a backward step. Whilst I didn't like Wilf's goal being ruled offside because of an arm or chest at least I understood how they arrived at the decision. If it happened enough times you can then have a debate on changing the rules.

My understanding is that one will not see the pictures whilst the check is still in progress but pictures will be permitted after the check is complete to show why the decision was made as per the protocol in the Euros.
