I was best friends with his son Howard at Primary School. Took me to my first ever Palace game v Chelsea, 7th February 1970, in his Ford Cortina. Dropped me and Howard off at the Director's lounge for crisps and orange squash before going off to get changed for the match. Different times.

We lost 4 - 1 by the way, some things never change. I still have the black and white programme. Can recall Ian Hutchinson's whirly arm throw ins. Happy days.

True gent was John.

What a great story. You were very lucky. He wore a pair of baseball boots that day as I recall cos the pitch was frozen. There were over 40,000 crowd.
Such different times. He was a great captain for our club.
RIP

Black hi-top canvas basketball boots on one occasion, Converse-styley. Pitch was frozen solid.

Lived in Biggin Hill, Village Green Avenue. Left to play in the NASL for St Louis All Stars at the time of the NY Cosmos and Tampa Bay Rowdies. Still have a postcard sent to me of the St Louis team photo.

Justice!

Except today, of course, Stepney would get his marching orders for such a cynical foul.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I was there, If i remember rightly George Best had just come back from a 6 week ban in front of a 60k crowd. We got absolutely hammered in the first half and went in only 1-0 down. When we equalised I didn't realise how quite a 60k crowd could be. Happy days.
RIP Shovel. Thanks for the memories.

The goal against Leeds was one of my most treasured memories over the years.

RIP Shovel

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Saw it on the Big Match the next day.

Should have gone to the game, given how many times that film has been shown since

I know this may be in wrong section but sad to learn of his death.
I remember him well along side his fellow full back Bert Howe.
As good a penalty taker as Luka.
RIP
