I think I remember it being played once in the summer months as an experiment but I may be wrong.

I have a feeling that the Afcon 2021 was due to be played in June/July of last year but because of the weather in Cameroon it was switched to Jan/Feb of this year.

I have just perused the following :
AFCON winners 2019? Who were the winners of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations? Winners of The 2019 AFCON? Senegal and Algeria played the AFCON 2019 final on the 19th July 2019.

Probably why he is going - they’ll find out how fit he is after 8 weeks out and no real training .

Surely they don’t need to rely on someone who is half fit and certainly lacking match fitness ?

According to Wiki:-

Under Ahmad Ahmad's presidency, there were discussions regarding further changes to the Africa Cup of Nations. In July 2017, two changes were proposed:[22][23]

Switch the competition from January to the Northern Hemisphere summer

expansion from 16 to 24 teams (effective from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations)

On 20 July 2017, the CAF Executive Commission approved the propositions at a meeting in Rabat, Morocco.[2]

I read that it was due to be played in January 2021 but was pushed back to this year, so not a mid-season tournament. The decision was made in June 2020 which may have muddied things though.

Edit: it was due to take place in June/July 2021 but it was moved to January/February 2021 "due to unfavourable climactic conditions" (something we've all experienced at some time or another I'm sure). It was then moved for a second time to 2022 due to COVID.

There are only a small number of countries in Africa who could hold a tournament in the summer without the blistering temperatures that would make it impractical.

Due to poverty the number of countries that actually want to host the tournament isn't that great anyway.

So during our winter is probably the right time to host it that is not the issue for me as I posted previously FIFA need to block this time out for international football.

Last year we had 3 two week international breaks in September / October and November just as the club season started to get interesting. Why can't England and the rest play these games at the same time as AFCON then there's no problem.

I find international qualifiers boring as they are dragged out over 2 years better to make them min tournaments.

The revolving door is rotating again, 'Tinkerman' has been sacked.

Watford's previous managers couldn't have a reunion - there isn't a hotel big enough to host the event.

Oh boy, that is a shame. I like Ranieri.

It will be interesting to see who they turn to.

Predictable.

Fans were actually pointing fingers at the board and owners more than Ranieri tbh but it’s the manager who gets the blame .

Seems Roy Hodgson is coming in !
