I haven't heard about this. When is it? Is there a link to info about it?

Unfortunately, I'm too far south to get there myself.

Sounds like a fine gesture by fans. I would welcome some more info on this.

It would be nice to think it was being supported by the club, especially as, at the time of death, there was no tribute - not even in the match programme.

Because of the circumstances of his death, it was almost as if he was blanked from the club's history.

Was this the player who took his own life in the main stand by hanging? Seem to remember a few years ago, there was mention of it on here, or maybe old age is playing tricks with my memory.

The tragedy occurred just hours after he received an unwelcome surprise when, along with teammates, he reported for pre-season signing-on at the Palace ground.

He found that the club had signed a replacement goalkeeper, a discovery that doubtless added new anguish to his already troubled state of mind.

Not only had he lost his cherished girlfriend, but now a shadow had been cast over his career.

It is perhaps significant that what happened next took place outside the club's boardroom - perhaps his spur-of-the-moment way of ‘punishing’ the directors.

The situation must have been extreme difficult for everyone at the club - not least to the new 'keeper, Gilbert Allen, from New Washington, who perhaps felt that, even though no fault of his own, his arrival had contributed to Callender's emotional turmoil

Unlike Callender, who had nine successful seasons with Palace, Allen only lasted two seasons at Selhurst Park before returning to the North-east, playing first for for Ashington then for Blyth Spartans.

Does anyone know if Gilbert Allen played a single match for Palace?

Not according to the Players database, he's not even listed.

As far as I can make out , Gilbert Allen also struggled at Blyth Spartans, for the most part playing for their reserve side.
