My recollection of the recent policy Palace have adopted on anyone over 30 is to take it season by season and only offer 1 year; in the round, that seems a sensible approach to me and did not create problems with Tomkins, Clyne, McArthur etc.

I would have thought there was the opportunity to be a bit creative with Kouyate whilst not breaching the general policy; for whatever reason however, it has not been possible to find middle ground.

The other player who comes to mind where this might become an issue is Wilf who I believe is currently 29; maybe he will still be under 30 when/if he negotiates a new contract which might avoid the issue.

Agree re Kouyate - a 1 year with a guaranteed extra year if x games played surely would have suited both parties.

IMHO Wilf is not interested in signing a new contract. If it does he will wait until the summer and see what options are available. If none appear he will re-sign with Palace and say how much he loves the club and never considered moving.

Phew
Hes gone
He played in defence and ball watched
He played in defence and acted like a midfielder.
When in midfield he thought he was a defender and ball watched
Yes we had some good moments but hes gone, we move on!!

They had the jammiest win I think I've ever seen.
You'd think Cooper would splash out on a dentist.

Unfair (and largely inaccurate)...nearly always put in a decent shift for us. But yes, of course, he's gone. So we move on.

Mmmm. whilst Kouyate was a useful player he was never truly outstanding. I really like the way the squad is getting younger and hopefully Dougie has some midfield additions up his sleeve.
As for big Ben ....if u left a dustbin in the penalty area and fired balls into the box, occasionally the ball will hit it and ricochet into the net... thank god hes finally gone ... £100 000 a week better off.

underrated, versatility makes him a great squad player, superb positional sense, does the ugly stuff well and the pretty stuff badly ... I don't want this thread to go political but he did back Idrisse Gueye's stance on 'rainbow virtue signalling', and was quite explicit about it, and I don't think this was a minor factor in the decision not to renew his contract - he cud have lent his support more discreetly whatever your views are, and he might still be with us if he had. But he is clearly not the future - I was hoping Morgan Gibbs White might be, but I'm sure we'll get our Gallagher replacement b4 the deadline.

if we're serious about advancing the club players like Kouyate are exactly the type of ones we need to cut. Does a limited job but nothing spectacular in the modern game. We need midfielders that can do more. Nothing against the man himself, but I'm happy that we've made room for an upgrade. Unlike in recent history, there does seem to be a plan to our transfers, so not worried if we're considered 'light' in midfield right now as the window is open.

I think CK was a great signing for us and I personally have a lot of respect for him. Was the kind of player we needed and did the job.

All that said I think you are correct (bold). I really do feel as though we have moved on from being perennial relegation fearing battlers.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Cheikhou has obviously kept his fitness up to scratch.

He got on for the last few minutes at Everton and scored a great goal.

Well not exactly in fact Gray equalised for Everton.

Good luck to him.

Although he had his limitations we're missing his versatility and physical presence badly.

I think every fan, when looking at our options in midfield and defence, knew we needed to keep Kouyate. It's not like a two year deal would have bankrupted us. Going down because our squad is as thin as Tescos Value bog roll will cost us a lot more. Watching Olise in Central midfield yesterday should have at least been a clue as to our midfield options. Now most of our defenders are injured too. Wonder who could have covered there?

I think there is more to Kouyate leaving than a 2 year contract, my guess is he either fell out with Vieira or wanted a big hike is wages. Its a shame, as he was a useful player.
