Of course from Chelsea's side it was a smart move. Just a shame that the refs hide behind their rule book, rather than making an example and eradicating the clear and obvious cheating.

But maybe that's what Palace are missing a bit of at the min. Some old fashioned 'street smarts'. The foul that prevents the break, the timewasting, the shirt tugs that go unnoticed.

The things that he big teams do well and get away with it, and in tight games can be the difference between 1 and 3 points

Jimmy Mac would be useful for this kind of a thing. We need to be a bit more confrontational - although we have to say PV tried his best.
I was thinking, in hindsight (after the disappointment turns towards expectation) that a more attacking line up was probably the right idea. We didn't play badly really and Chelsea are thrashing Milan right now, whereas we could have easily won or drawn. We really could do with a win - I'm kind of expecting it. Our defence could be an issue with injuries - again making me think we have to attack. We're much better when we attack, we seem poor when we sit back. That's how it's looked to me anyway - pretty much for a lot of last season too.

When we sit back you can sense a complete change of mentality in both the team & right across the stadium, its like we have reconciled ourselves to a conscious decision to spend the rest of the game hanging on for grim death - for sure the opposition cannot fail to recognise this -

Bring in a sin bin. Would be better all round.
Timid refs would love it. Easy way out.

it's such a fine line between success or failure, just two decisions that went wrongly against us, the Chelsea sending off and the 3rd goal wrongly disallowed against Man city too put us 3-0 up at halftime, probably 6 points instead of none, and 5th in the table, having played exactly like we have in all the other games.

Genuine question.
When have we ever struck gold against 10 men?
It’s usually the opposite.

Very good point.

Apropos the Silva incident, in my humble estimation it was a possible goalscoring opportunity, not obvious, accordingly the issue of a yellow card was the correct decision.

100% agree, we are a team built for possession. We don't look comfortable ,like we did under Roy, sitting back and absorbing pressure.

Absolutely.

Whilst there is swinging from one extreme to the other I hope to avoid that but would like to see us adopt a strategy of 'attack being the best form of defence' especially in light of defenders dropping like flies.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I really don't think they would be of much use to the injured party. In the full blooded thrust of rugby they are punitive because you need all the weight and muscle you can muster more or less the whole game. In football you can easily do without one player for 15 minutes with some ad hoc tactics.

You make a further good point about how we have never really cashed in on 10 men, and it is quite easy to restructure your team to combat being one player less. But this would have been a sending off in the middle of the first half and towards the end of the game injuries and tiredness in the Chelsea camp could well have helped us to at least hold the draw.

The defensive woes are of real concern to me, indeed even before the season commenced my brow was etched with worry.

We were exceedingly fortunate that Andersen and Guehi were regular partners last season. In terms of central defensive backup we have Tomkins who is aged 33 and in the twilight of his career, and Richards who has limited top-class experience.Ward and Clyne are in their 30s and more prone to injury at this stage of their careers.Mitchell is still very much a 'Work in progress'.

West Brom AWAY a couple of seasons ago. It was 1-1 when the Baggies man was sent off as I recall and 5-1 at FT. Tekkers actually scored 2 that day!
