I saw about an hour of the game. Gordon had a few moments and Raymond once again looked tidy when he came on, but we were a bit sloppy and headless. Balmer has an insane throw on him which can reach past the penalty spot, but sadly his defending does not seem quite at the same level yet. After recent highs hopefully this will give some perspective to the lads and push them to try harder. It also highlights how far from the PL standard most of them are though.

While Barton's comments after the game [Link] seem more suited to those of a Sunday League manager rather than a professional one, we weren't great and I can understand his frustration. Do they get some kind of pay-off from the PL to play the top youth teams?

Barton went on to expand on his thoughts.

I personally think he is just peed off his 38 year old experienced player got sent off.
Think we would have been better served playing Ebiowei who is not playing first team games and maybe if we can field a couple of outfield players over age like Riedewald to make us more competitive.

I think he has a point. Clubs like the Gas will have a smaller equal and these matches are hardly ones to bring in sufficient income to make them worth playing. I wonder how much profit was generated last night?

It's just another trophy that is probably meaningless to everyone until you get to within a sniff of the final.

He's probably right in most of what he's saying. Shame he had to slate a load of kids trying to make it in the process but he is pure scum so not surprising.

An off night for the U21s against a stronger than expected Rovers outfit in this odd grouping.

We have Everton at home this Sunday hopefully it will be out of their system by then, quite sloppy generally.

We have great potential and with 31 games to go for the first team a few may get their opportunity, Rak-Saki etc. are out on loan.

Olise was only 19 I wouldn't say they were too young, it depends on the individual, and they are heading the PL beating Chelsea etc.

You just never know.

COYP.

In my opinion, the most interesting point that Barton made was U21 players being so far away from the level required to play League football.

It's something that has been discussed on here before.

I still think that the best way to ready young players is to have Reserve teams where you would get a mixture of age groups. That set up also provided a better opportunity for fringe players and those returning from injury to play competitive games. The main benefit though, was to give promising young players exposure to playing proper ' mens ' football. I don't think the U21 structure does that properly.

Thinking about it, it's still really embarrassing that 38-year-old Glenn Whelan managed to get sent off when his team were 2-0 up against a youth team in a competition his manager apparently doesn't care about. He didn't seem to physically confront anyone so he must have said something pretty awful to the ref to get a red. Classy.

What an absolute pr!ck. If he doesn't like the competition then why doesn't he play his youth team in it ? I haven't forgotten that he stubbed a cigar into the eye of a Man City youth player. He shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the game.

This is the crux of it.

And whilst not nice to hear, we all know that our U21 team wont all transition to the first team. Many will not transition to men's football at any level.

But even if it feels a little unfair on some of the lads, we need to field a team al season, even if only 1 or 2 have a chance of progressing.

We've all been guilty of seeing some good academy performances and presuming they are good enough, only for them to be released to the very bottom of the football pyramid

The progress of the academy Team is extraordinary.

But it still has some way to go. The Academy was only opened a short while ago. Give it time.

BTW is Joey Barton really an oracle whose opinion is any more valid than the next twot?

He’s right really, I’ve always thought that tournament is a farce, men against boys, no surprise an under 21 side never gets anywhere near the final, they should’ve left it how it was, just league 1 and 2
