The progress of the academy Team is extraordinary.

But it still has some way to go. The Academy was only opened a short while ago. Give it time.

BTW is Joey Barton really an oracle whose opinion is any more valid than the next twot?

No. But he had a decent career and is going to be better at understanding levels than us.

I guess the point isn't really a direct dig at our academy, but all academy's. Most of the kids wont make it, and playing against seasoned pros, highlights how far away they really are.

But it doesn't really mean that its not working. If we can progress just 1 player ever 2-3 years into the first team commercially that's probable ok. Especially with deals like AWB.

I'm surprised Barton could take the time off from beating up his wife to manage a side. Is he part-time?

In my opinion, the most interesting point that Barton made was U21 players being so far away from the level required to play League football.

It's something that has been discussed on here before.

I still think that the best way to ready young players is to have Reserve teams where you would get a mixture of age groups. That set up also provided a better opportunity for fringe players and those returning from injury to play competitive games. The main benefit though, was to give promising young players exposure to playing proper ' mens ' football. I don't think the U21 structure does that properly.

The U21 league allows for a goalkeeper and 5 others who are over 21 to play in each team. It's not really any different to a reserve team - it's the selection each club makes that makes it so.

If we wanted to:

Johnstone

Rodney Richards Balmer Adaramola

Riedewald Milivojevic Hughes

Ebiowei Mateta Gordon

That'd be within the rules.

Losing two nil to a league one side currently in the relegation zone certainly does put some perspective onto where the majority of the players are and the extent of the step up.....it levels us because we can get carried away with the fanfare.

Barton's words are harsh and crass to air so publicly and seem born from his frustration with the referee, however that doesn't mean they weren't mostly true.

It would be, but whats the purpose of the team? Sure winning is great, but the aim has to be providing a pathway to potential stars. I dont want Luka picking up his wages and blocking talent as well

...

That applies to the U21 League as it enables clubs to give game time to first team squad members coming back from injury etc. I'm not convinced it applies to the EFL cup, though.

Man City and Liverpool are a combined 0-3 in this competition and I would not be surprised to see a couple of years down the road one or two of their players going for 20 million+ after barely playing for their first team

Only two of the side put out are over 19 and Ozoh and Rodney just 17 so plenty of time for progress
