I have a feeling that after the stupendous 5-0 win we never had the best of results in the next few games but this might be a figment of my imagination.

Our strikers need to watch this to see how to make runs and find space. The team look superior to our current one in many ways. Pitch was crap though. Funny to see Selhurst packed in the old 40,000 days - probably more.

Pitches of yesteryear became barren mud heaps with clawing mud affixing itself to boots.

It was only the other week that I was in conversation with a gentleman who used to scout for Brian Clough and I brought up the subject of the pitch at Derby's Baseball Ground.

Our pitch used to be even worse when teams shared with us. I seem to remember the league threatening us about the state of the pitch at some stage. Still better than Oldham's though, what a con that was.

We lost 2-1 at Leicester the following week and then beat Southampton 3-0 on Boxing Day, but we struggled to be consistent in the 2nd half of the season.

Absolutely right.

I just had a feeling that after that 5-0 victory it did not give us the boost to collect admirable results in the next few games.

It is the game that stands out for all Palace fans of a certain age.
It had all the ingredients of a special occasion ... a pre-Christmas match, a big crowd and great atmosphere, a murky afternoon with the floodlights on, big name opposition and a rousing 5 goal performance from Palace.

I'm sure that I remember that there were rumours that George Best may be playing which is why the numbers were swelled as we all wanted to see the great man.

Sadly he didn't play

Glorious memories.
People have already commented on the pitch. A couple of other observations:
The good spirit. At 4-0 down, Dennis Law is helped to his feet by John Jackson, both exchanging smiles.
And the goal celebrations. Brace for Don Rogers, 5-0 to Palace, he trudges back to the centre circle accepting the congratulations of his team-mates. No-one rips their shirt off exposing their tattoos. Indeed, no-one has tattoos.
Real men.
Great team.
Wonderful day.

Those were the days:

Dodgy Barnets all round
Goalkeepers with muddy knees
Referee in a jacket with a white collar and cuffs (with cufflinks)
'Brentford Nylons' advertising hoarding
'The Glaziers' should have scored 6 just in the first half

It's a shame that the 4:3 TV aspect hasn't been retained by the CPFC website. The stretched, widescreen image makes the players (and everything else) look wider and squatter than in reality; the reality being that footballers then were actually quite scrawny compared to today's players.
