Palace 1 - 0 Barnsley

Tuesday September 12 2000 - League

Clinton Morrison's early goal turned out to be the difference in tonight's clash between Crystal Palace and Barnsley.

The youngster rounded former Palace keeper Kevin Miller after a long ball by skipper Neil Ruddock and found the net from a tight angle.

Morrison could have made it two from the penalty spot just before the half time whistle but the Barnsley keeper saved it. It was the third missed penalty by Palace already this season.

In the second half Barnsley came close through Barnard but he squandered his chance. With this win the Eagles climbed to the thirteenth position.

Post match comments

Delighted Alan Smith said: "I think our first half performance was outstanding, we really deserved the win - the score shows no reflection of our superiority.

"Hopefully this win will instil some confidence in the younger players and until my nice boys turn into not so nice boys then they won't get the edge they need."

Barnsley boss Dave Bassett said: "We knew two games in three days was going to be difficult and a goal in the first minute left us feeling a bit despondent.

"But we picked up in the second half and are disappointed not to come away with any points."
