Very sad news.
The only man to have won world titles on 2 and 4 wheels.

My daughter used to be in school with his daughter and I recall picking my daughter up from his lovely house after a birthday party.I heard that the 'Cabinet' used his house during the war.

A few years ago, Surtees' son, Henry was tragically killed on the track when a wheel fell off and hit him on the head.

Thoughts go out to all his family at this sad time.

RIP

Met John many times back in the late 80's/early 90's as he was a very good friend of my best mates dad. We were all into racing bikes at the time and had some great great chats.
Sad news.

RIP.

Was fortunate to have met and chatted to John on several occasions, the last being at a presentation to him at Ashburton school where he was an old boy. He recounted a story as a boy, being shot at by a Messerschmitt 109 pilot as he walked down Long Lane on his way home from school.
RIP John Surtees.

Never met him but as a youngster used to be taken to Crystal Palace - for bike racing on Easter Monday and cars on Whit Monday (I think) - and saw him racing on both bikes and cars. Another boyhood hero gone. RIP.

Spot on Rob. Bikes Easter Monday and August Bank Holiday Holiday and cars at Whitsun and later in the summer. I visited the Palace race track many times until its closure in 1972. My first visit was Easter Monday 1963 for the motor bike racing. By then Surtees was well established as a car racer. I did see him on 4 wheels (Formula 2) there though - 1965 and 1967 I believe.

There are now very few F1 drivers, who were racing in the 1960s, still with us.
