Everything is newsworthy if you are a footballer. That's how SKY makes money.

From a sporting point of view, coming out as a footballer makes no sense. The crowd at a football match give you a hard time if you have a stupid haircut so being gay is open season for abuse. It's illegal of course but that doesn't stop f***wits being f***wits in a large crowd. There is also a certain acceptance of abuse if it is perceived as just being done to put off the opposition. Who will forget the treatment John Fashanu got at Selhurst when his brother came out.

The other issue is how your team mates will feel with a gay man in the changing room. These are not mature men half the time, they are immature lads with immature lads attitudes. I don't know what impact that would have in 2017.

I watched the bbc documentary a couple of years ago about Justin fashanu (it was made by his niece - johns daughter) johns attitude to his brother even post death was appalling . Had an intense dislike for him and the way he spoke about his brother coming out. Nasty man
