The euphoria hasn't died down yet but the more serious part of this summer's cricket for us traditionalists is about to start.

One has to feel sorry for our inspirational one day captain Eoin Morgan who goes from the peak of winning the World Cup to playing 20/20 cricket for Middlesex and there are one or two others that probably won't be playing in the Ashes team.

The emergence of Jofra Archer will mean that someone who expected to be in the red ball team now won't be and we have to pick three from Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Curran, Archer and Wood. Anderson will probably be injured and Broad probably needs to do something outstanding in the game against Ireland next week to make the cut.

Opener is the other position up for grabs. Keaton Jennings is great against spin on slow turning pitches but not up to the mark against fast bowling and he would be a walking wicket for Mitchell Starc.

The talk has been about giving Jason Roy a chance but I wonder if he has the technique for a Test Match as even Surrey haven't trusted him to open

A genuinely interesting series that....now with Smith and Warner back for Australia makes it more fifty fifty.

Could see it being as close as the 2005 series so hopefully another epic as long as England win.

Roy to open but it's hard to pick the other opener. Burns hasn't done much for Surrey but think he will get picked.

For the bowlers we still lack a quality spinner so Ali or Rashid but neither are that good. Would leave out Woakes for Archer. I have always thought Woakes is a better batsman than bowler in Test Cricket. Anderson may not be fit and Broad hasn't been taking many wickets for Notts so maybe an outsider will emerge. Mahmood at Lancashire has been prolific this summer.

Short answer is that I believe Australia can easily take wickets, particularly Starc and Lyon, although the others are okay too.
Anderson and Broad are not the answer. Archer has some pace but would need to not be straight-jacketed; he will be over coached no doubt.
There will be no dangerous spinner for England with Ali doing that job - whilst he is adequate he is more of a batsman.
In other words, England will struggle to take wickets - which means that you can't win Tests.
Also Australia will be quite dangerous with the bat with Warner back. I can't stand him, in fact, I would love him to punch me in a bar and see what happens, but he is clearly a powerful batsman.
Looking at England, one opener is not enough. There is a question mark even over Root's best batting position and there has been recent England batting collapses on a regular basis - often stemming from the openers not being able to deliver any kind of platform.
England are better fielders but not by much as the Aussies are still good.
In short, I would put a bet on the Aussies - they are even used to English conditions now - whilst England will not necessarily doctor the pitches enough to suit themselves.
Weather is probably England's main danger but you can't rely on the luck of the toss and the weather over Five Tests.

We do have history in that regards as Liam Plunkett was an exciting fast bowler as a youngster until the ECB coaches tinkered with his action so that he lost his effectiveness and subsequently his place in the team.

Hopefully different coaches won't make the same mistake

Just saw the squad. Ali is the only spinner - no more than a back up bowler really. Will need pitches conditions that suit swing but that makes Starc so dangerous.
Woakes has been doing well recently - hopefully he can continue. I don't think Broad has been good enough: should be dropped. Want to see Archer but hope he can hack it. Stokes needs to bowl with discipline.
Unconvinced that there is a genuine opening pair.

You know, I really do think that this could be Tim's year.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I think that's a worry for all of us. Rory Burns is hopelessly out of form and I assume that there is a good reason why Jason Roy doesn't open for Surrey.

It's one thing opening in 50 over or 20/20 cricket with their fielding and bowling restrictions but quite another to do the same in the ultimate contest between batsman and bowler

They should have given Dominic Sibley a go as opening in the Ireland game.

In my humble opinion we have problems at Nos 1,2 and 3.
