Fingers crossed that Trump wastes no time in replacing her with someone much better.

Or at least better looking.

Whatever happens it's going to be spicey.

I am amazed it has made headlines in the UK. I have never heard of her.

You're going to be hearing a lot more about it over the next few weeks when her replacement is forwarded.

Her death also marks the death of the feminist movement having free reign to campaign, legislate and act. Acting as they wish without any kickback from men about men's rights.

the Trump pendulum is swinging things back from the looney left to the centre.

all hail Trump.

Indeed.

If Trump wins the election they are going to completely lose their sh1t.

I can't deny it isn't going to be pretty but hey it's been ugly for a long time.

Mind you if Biden wins it's still going to be spicy....the Democrats would get the same sh1t they dished out...We can all do, 'not my president'.

The state of some of these comments. Ugly.

As someone who's taken the time to study her career a real feminist icon and a force for good in the US.

The Republicans trying to force someone through before November would be a total hypocrisy after what was done to Merrick Garland.

As it hasn't been said yet, due to the palpable excitement at her death, I'll first offer a simple Rest in Peace. A tough old bird.

There's no way the Republican party won't look this gift horse in the mouth. Let's say they're unable to get someone through before the election, there is nothing stopping them doing so in the period after the election and up to January 2021 regardless of the result. On top of that imagine a scenario where the election result is contested, which doesn't seem that unlikely in the current political climate. It could go all the way up to the Supreme Court, so the timing of her death has massive implications. It would be the Bush-Gore election on steroids. A crazy year and all the ingredients for a civil war.

You obviously equate modern feminism as a positive.

Regardless I think your second paragraph makes a good point. In a far less polarised political arena I'd agree with you that a new justice should be left to who wins office this close to an election.

However, the Democrats haven't made even the slightest most tiny bit of effort of parizanship through the entire Trump presidency so I think it's a bit rich to now expect the Republicans to play noble now.

The republicans remember the behaviour of the Democrats during the Brett Kavanaugh nomination and this will be sweet revenge for them.

As most of us know....there isn't any patching up. The right and left in America might as well speak two different languages and it's a matter of when not if this comes to some kind of head.

Not just these comments are ugly! Most are here. This is a nest of nastiness which often leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. There are some seriously unhealthy views held by several regular posters in these threads, although one stands head and shoulders above the others.

Hopefully there will be just enough decent Republican Senators to thwart the hypocrisy of McConnell. 2 have already indicated they won't support a confirmation before the January swearing in of the next POTUS. It only needs 2 more and some will be looking over their shoulders to see whether their own re-election prospects are enhanced, or harmed, in going one way or the other. That's the sad reality of US politics today.

If that doesn't happen and Biden wins then I forsee demands for an amendment to the constitution imposing term limits both on Senators and Justices. Or maybe the compulsory retirement of say the 2 longest serving Justices in the 6 months following a Presidential election.

Requiring Senators to retire after a set number of years would carry the great benefit of them being able to vote according to their conscience and not in able to secure another term.
