I've heard from very good honest folks that apparently Sol Campbell was very much interested in taking over as manager at Crystal Palace and was left very dissapointed that he was overlooked in favour of Patrick Vieira

Sol hasn't made it any secret regarding his desire to be a top class manager

OVERLOOKED Sol Campbell still has a fierce passion for coaching and desire to manage – why won’t anyone give the former Arsenal, Tottenham and England defender a chance?

I think he did okay in lower league clubs who were on their knees financially.

However what we don't know is what he is like as an individual? Over the years he has made some strange statements now maybe that is the MSM making mischief but that maybe the reason it is holding him back?

I would hope that he gets a chance at a lower club that is ambitious and isn't going bust then maybe we can see what he does.

It's a bit ironic that he is complaining (is he?) to be overlooked in favour of PV, not quite sure where that fits on the discrimination scale.

His 22% win percentage won’t help.

In fairness if you look at the clubs he managed they were in real trouble before he took over. That's why I hope he gets a chance at a lower league club that isn't.

Lower league possibly but Premier League clubs will want more than that when they've got the rest of the world to choose from.

Campbell's problems appear closely linked to his "difficult" personality. I've heard from more than one source that over the years, a number of clubs (admittedly outside the Premiership) have interviewed him with a serious interest in hiring him but completely changed their minds after speaking to him in person. Wasn't that the reason he lost the jobs he did get, too; the results weren't awful (given the resources he had at his disposal) but within six months he had fallen out with everyone from the chairman to the players? From what I've heard in the media and from direct interviews with him, he appears to take the view that it's "my way or the highway" and he has a rather higher view of his (totally unproven) managerial abilities than his prospective bosses do. Furthermore, he's been quick to play the racism card as the reason he's had few opportunities. To be clear, it's pretty obvious that ingrained racism is almost certainly a reason we haven't had more black managers, but I'm not sure it's the reason Sol Campbell hasn't found a job.

It's not obvious to me. What evidence are you basing such a serious allegation on?

I think there"s more chance of him putting together a consortium to buy us than managing us, as he is loaded and we have just appointed a new manager!

Yup the jury is out on that one.

A few years ago the FA appointed Dalian Atkinson to trawl senior players particular black ones to do the coaching badges.

It is often bounded about how few black managers there are what is not mentioned is how few take the UEFA B licence. At one time there was only 13 qualified non white coaches (about 10 years ago) I think that number has got a lot better but until you have a decent number the gene pool is rather limited.

And of course just because you have the qualification you still need to learn your trade. You would not make a newly qualified teacher a headmaster.

I suspect that the numbers will get better from now on but only if they do the badges.

To demonstrate that 'ingrained racism is almost certainly a reason we haven't had more black managers' you would indeed need to know how many black candidates Palace have overlooked, and also show that some or all of them were as good or better than the person who did get the job. That, or show that black potential candidates were discouraged from applying, not by their own reading of the cultural climate, but by the club itself.

If someone can't do that then they have absolutely no business making such a statement.
