Not just interesting. In part alarming, the reasons for leaving he gives, would suggest not much more than a new manager would be happening. It rather looks as if even that might not be quiet the truth as a number of the team he congratulates are rapidly running out of contract. It really does beg the question. What the hell is happening at the club.? Surely he takes a sideways swipe. You can’t won’t , give us a refreshed squad , we are off.

It was, and what those two did taking over from Frank de Boer was quite remarkable. I think many of us thought we were down for sure.

I’m not sure you can deduce much alarm from what he said tbh unless you’re seriously reaching. Perhaps you could say he insinuated there wasn’t a budget for transfers, but all reports suggest otherwise. Other than that he seems to be saying it was merely a natural time for the club to move in a different direction. I was a fully paid up member of the "Roy in" camp and have always been concerned he and Ray were effectively pushed out of the door. But if they’ve genuinely left of their own accord, I have no issues with it and am glad they’ve been able to do so with their heads held (somewhat) high - although I suspect they were fully aware of the disgruntlement from an increasingly vocal section of fans. I will reassert though, Roy earned a summer of investment. And had he got it, he would’ve shut a lot of people up and made the cliches about his brand of football look like the lazy caricatures they were. Edited by Mstrobez (19 Jun 2021 12.16pm)

I think Lewington made an important point on management in this interview that's very true and that even transcends football. He put forward the contention that the same voice with the same player can lose its impact over years implying it can reduce performance. He also made the happy point that with Palace this tendency didn't happen which says something about their set up. Tips hat on a successful tenancy.

Says a lot about Alex Ferguson's ability to motivate the class of 92 year after year. I think he did like to bring in players just to freshen it up and keep the old guard on their toes but Ray's point is well taken.

Either the management leaves or the players recycle. I wonder if this is a case of the psychology of motivation i.e. After a while players stop believing in the manager's hype or methods and so can't find the extra gear in performance any more. Makes you wonder about Sean Dyche though as he's been at Burnley for donkey years!

It's probably something that's mostly true but which differs in extent depending upon the quality of team leaders in both the staff and the playing squad. And like you say motivators like high teamsheet competition must play its role....which would be more true at bigger clubs. Sean Dyche comes across as a Hodgeson type manager who is very good at getting the most out of good/average players and maybe he keeps the turnover going. Perhaps like Hodgeson he would find his abilities less useful when it came to dealing with the top players who are already there, and where attack tactics are more required and expected. It was a very good feature. Ray is an excellent, talented and very experienced coach. He gave an insightful explanation of what the job entails and the reasons for leaving it behind. Thanks, Ray, for your contribution to the Palace story.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
