[Link] "Women's safety is once again in the spotlight - and walking home at night is often when their fears are most acute. Now a telephone helpline called Strut Safe, launched in Edinburgh last year, is keeping people company when they walk home alone." (BBC website) An emotionally-charged subject, with some people no doubt having first=hand experience of being followed at night in remote places. This company is offering to take calls from women experiencing harassment/being followed whilst making their way home at night. I don't want to pish on anyone's firework, but this raises many issues for me. Firstly, if you're in trouble, shouldn't your first call be to the police ? (and if you're in trouble, then a phone call is going to be too late at this stage to do any good) Secondly, if you think you're being followed, getting out your mobile phone would have several negative affects. 1. It shows your stalker that you are apprehensive/frightened 2. The mobile phone illuminates you and makes you a more visible target, especially the noise from you chatting away. 3. The phone distracts you from making important observations about your surroundings. Where is the best escape route ? is there a house i can knock on the front door ? When should i start running ? The best thing to have a mobile phone for in this scenario, is to have one of those really heavy old nokia phones and be ready to smash it into the head/face of any attacker. I don't want to pish on anyone's firework, but this raises many issues for me.
Firstly, if you're in trouble, shouldn't your first call be to the police ? (and if you're in trouble, then a phone call is going to be too late at this stage to do any good)

Secondly, if you think you're being followed, getting out your mobile phone would have several negative affects.
1. It shows your stalker that you are apprehensive/frightened
2. The mobile phone illuminates you and makes you a more visible target, especially the noise from you chatting away.
3. The phone distracts you from making important observations about your surroundings. Where is the best escape route ? is there a house i can knock on the front door ? When should i start running ? I would say they should get a taxi home but considering the number of drivers that are convicted for rape maybe not. If it makes women feel safer then why not. Edited by Badger11 (22 Jan 2022 9.25am) One more point
