So a survey of 1800 residents in LTN areas in London and three other large towns/cities has found that 45% of the sample favoured the schemes and 22% opposed. And the Guardian is chortling away at ehat it sees as the opposite result to what the PM was allegedly hoping for. That reaction in my opinion rests on a lazy interpretation of figures which are basically meaningless. Most inhabitants of towns and cities live in residential roads, with main roads chiefly populated by shops, offices, pubs, petrol stations and restaurants. And if people living in thnose roads are offered the chance to speak out against commuters, tradesmen and others dodging along their roads, I guess 90%+ will do so. Certainly I would. Selfish I know, but perfectly understandable. The only surprise to me is that only two-thirds of the (pathetically small) sample were in favour of the LTNs.

I think LTN's are great. Got friends who live in one and it means that all the poor people who used to try and shave a few minutes off their journeys by cutting through now have to sit on the main roads in loads of traffic meaning they have to leave home earlier and then get home later. But these friends can now enjoy a bit more peace and quiet. There is still a bus route that goes down their road (one of those hopper ones) but they are now trying to get that halted as well because apparently they are only used by OAP's and the like. Who have plenty of time on their hands to get the other buses taking them the long way around and if they have to get a couple, then so what? They are not paying for it and it gives them an excuse to be out of their homes. And apparently, it is merely a coincidence that these LTN are in the wealthier parts of the boroughs, almost all Labour by the way. Because otherwise people might assume that LTN's exist by way of making rich peoples lives nicer at the expense of the poor. And Labour are not about that.
