Why on God's good earth are we offering a contract to Nathan Ferguson ?
I have an air of benevolent befuddlement at this decision.

New contracts signed by 3 players in defence aged 32,33 and 34 and one offered to a player who last featured in a game as a substitute in Dec 2021 and has hardly played in recent seasons due to an injury.

Ferguson contract is probably more Pay as you play based. They know he was injured a lot so are not going to give him a basic salary.

Furguson, is a bit baffling , the older three not so much, for a start we don’t know what actual terms they are on, but beyond that it is important to try and keep some solid Palace character about the dressing room, training ground, and these three do that, amongst the increasing stream of new faces in the club, whilst still being able to do a stint when needed.
I would still like to see another defender ,capable of playing wide left side brought in ,maybe Dougie, would as well, there is plenty of time in this window.

In terms of the academy big decisions made on:

Reece Hannam

David Omilabu

Dan Quick

All three considered promising not so long ago. Must have had a poor year at this vital stage.

The step from youth team to senior football is so much bigger than people imagine. So many impressive juniors fall by the wayside because they cannot make that jump. One recent name that springs to mind is Reise Allesani. He was being watch by Man Utd I think at one point then could not make the step up required.

To be perfectly honest all it shows me is how little money we have to spend and how little ambition we have as a club.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Makes sense, I think I remember at one point Barcelona were looking at Hannam or was it Quick, one of those two.

Im inclined to agree with you. I'd go so far as to say, it might take us being relegated to give those that run the club a bloody great kick up the arse, if you see my meaning.

Standing still in the EPL, is basically falling backwards & relegation is waiting.

Lets hold fire a, it may be that SP has 50mill to spend and he is going all in on a CF and LW if Wilf leaves.

so I agree that these are uninspiring, but might be part of a bigger plan.

For the money Palace has we have done very well since Parish turned up.

We have nothing to complain about as far as I'm concerned and indeed, I think we have had quite our share of luck compared to some.

The 'get your chequebook out' is a very common cry from the fanbase but unless you're in the top six you're competing on the step below for players....just as the Championship do against us. Unless a player is an improvement on what you have it's spending money for the sake of it.

Which smaller clubs have broken the usual club monopoly without a huge investor like Man City?

As it is realistically we play a league within a league.
