I have been asked by the daughter to try and trace some info about the subject who was app on Palace's books for the 1947-48 season. I have checked the programmes i have from this season and can find no mention of him, im assuming he was the reserves keeper as he doesnt feature on any lists as actually having played a 1st team game.
Any info would be appreciated as its his 90th birthday next month
Thanks

Not sure this helps but I attach a team photo taken probably in 1947 or 1948 - there are nearly 30 players in it and 4 goalkeepers. Dick Graham is the one in front - and another keeper Bob Lucas is the one on the right and he was only at the club between June 1946 and June 1948. So could Walter be one of the others?
Roy Bailey joined in 1949 so I don't think he's one of the keepers here.

I had my mind ,body and soul wrapped around The Palace in 1947/48 and I never heard of him!. It was said at that time one Palace player changed his name to Naylor,Could this have anything to do with it?

I think Freddie Kurz is 3rd left seated and Jack Lewis 4th left seated.

The bald headed Bill Bassett is next to gk Dick Graham centre.

I have the 1947-8 club handbook, which lists every player on the books in the summer of 1947.

There are 5 goalkeepers listed:-

Dick Graham, Bob Lucas, Letham, F.F.G. Elliot, and D. Groombridge (junior).

Sadly I don't have the 1948-9 one.

In that photo I sent, does this lady recognise any of the 4 keepers?

Thanks for the photo. It must have been taken in 1947 because its not raining and in 1948 it never stopped raining!.Never knew we had 30 players on the books then but I suppose the Club could afford them as most earned less than the the maximum wage of ten quid a week.Yes I have identified several but I'm still studying the photo and will eventually get back to you. In those days I think I only ever saw Dick Graham in goal. He was one of my idols because I was at Selhurst on Boxing Day 1945 when he signed for us from Leicester if I'm not mistaken. Lots of memories coming to the surface!.
