i was recommended to watch this programme now I have the Amazon Firestick loaded with Kodi and can get all Sky box sets for free.... I watched the first episode last night and have concluded that it is a fusion of "Conan The Barbarian", "Lord of the Rings", "Snow White and the 7 Dwarves", and "You P*rn.". Heads chopped off by Sean Bean, Dwarves, T1ts and Fanny and rumpy pumpy...... "Spartacus" pretty much has that too (without Sean Bean thankfully) I'll continue watching "Boardwalk Empire" and "Breaking Bad" for now methinks. Edited by Hoof Hearted (02 May 2016 9.22am)

I watched about one and three-quarters seasons of GoT. It really should be right up my strasse, but I just could make myself be into it. Now it seems that every fan spends their entire week stressing about how they hated what happened last week, until the next episode drops and they start all over again. The whole meme of filming yourself watching the show is just silly, too. Clearly, it's a well made show. It's just that killing main characters as a means of creating / keeping interest, instead of any other manner of plot twists available, just seems lazy to me. Even Deadwood and The Sopranos, given the environment in which each show was set, did not declare open season on the major characters. Therefore, when one got offed, it was truly a shock that would reverberate through the show for a long time - instead of until next week when another one bites the dust as it is on GoT. Honestly, why bother investing emotionally in a character on GoT, when they're just as likely to get their head lopped off before you've seen the first pair of tits for that week?
We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

I quite like that aspect of the show that 'anyone could get it', although in fairness you can really work out 'who's is and is not expendable'. Whilst its made out like the writer is clever for 'creating suspense' this way, its fairly common in literature to have characters as a means of exposition, rather than something to appeal to the audience - and then do away with them when their 'expositional journey' is done with. Its really only the Red Wedding that really threw a spanner in the works. That way. Very few characters died without serving some expositional purpose, necessary to the structure of the themes and aspects of the novels. I like the fact it doesn't pander to the audience, but its hardly original in this, even on HBO (In terms of 'anyone' can die anytime, then the kind of this is really Oz, also on HBO, which even killed the character who narrates the show).

Problem with GoT is that its fans think its better than it actually is. Its a pretty good, but its not 'the best thing ever'. What it does well is epic and redefine genre, but that genre is hardly difficult to redefine, given its largely footnotes on Tolkien and full of fans who probably haven't actually read too much literature outside of genre fiction.

Was a complete cop out if you ask me! The thing that made GOT so original and enjoyable was the fact anyone could be next to die. Doesn't matter if you are the big star or not and now that's no longer true. Knew they were gonna bring him back but still annoyed me.

GoT is better than most previous similar genre TV because of the budget (reports suggest $6m per episode) - and that can attract the actors to exploit that - as well as the better FX. Granted, a huge budget does not guarantee quality (see Pan - $150m cost/$42m takings). It also keeps the interest because no-one is guaranteed to be around for the next episode, stars are expendable (Sean Bean, Charles Dance) and the writing is good and unpredictable (Sean Bean's death/Red Wedding/Jon Snow etc). The other thing about this series is that it's not following a book, as the book hasn't been written yet, so may not have quite the twists, turns and expendable characters as before.

I think there is a difference between my favourite and the best. I do really enjoy game of thrones. In fact I probably enjoy it more than The Sopranos, however the Sopranos is an amazing achievement, as it essentially revisits the idea of 'The Great American' novel in a new format, and uses multiple different techniques from American literature and cinema to achieve this (as well as exploration of themes and metaphor of family, belonging, the mind and being). Personally I really rate innovation, styles and technique higher than 'a good story' (which is why I love and rate Mr Robot). What GoT does really well is 'Epic Scale' in that it presents both a world wide drama, and individual personal/existential dramas, without losing the power of either. So I probably enjoy Game of Boners more, than The Sopranos, but I think the Sopranos is actually better. Although I really also reckon that 'The Magicians' and 'Banshee' are also better than Game of Thrones (if less enjoyable). Banshee also does explicit violence, sex and nudity much better than GoT. Banshee is a series where you can almost smell the sex and taste the blood splatter.

IMDB rates it 8.4 to GoT's 9.5, but the amount of votes for GoT is nearly 1m rather than Banshee's 50K.
